Under 8 Green vs Prahran (R9)- Well, our run of incredible winter mornings came to an abrupt end and all in one hit…. Wow. The boys were faced with one of their greatest challenges yet, arctic like conditions, sleet, rain, wind… puddles and a little bit of mud, which was all new to our boys! In addition to the conditions, we were a man down fielding 17 players. The game got underway and our boys scoffed at the conditions, with the midfield dominating the clearances. Spencer, Mans, Lachie and Angus teaming up beautifully and our starting rover Jack Robinson was at the bottom of every pack feeding the ball out to the midfield. I must admit at times I was wondering where Jacks’ snorkel was. Zac… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Green vs East Malvern (R8)- Another magnificent morning at the Boss, with a perfect crisp winter's day, although I sensed a few bleary eyes amongst the parents after the gala last night. The captains for the day were Angus and Zac who have both had strong years and were keen to lead the boys out for our game against Malvern East. Before the game, we spoke about sharing the ball and looking to give the ball to a teammate in a better position and it was great to see the boys put this into action in the first quarter. The mids dominated with Angus, Jack A and Spencer giving our forwards chance after chance and with Charlie playing up and finding space - it was… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Green vs East Brighton Vampires (R7)- It was great to be back at "the Boss" today after a couple of weeks on the road and again, Melbourne turned on a perfect day. The lads were a bit all over the place in the warm up, this could have been because the coach forgot the footballs so we had to make do with a size 3 leather ball, something the boys aren't really used too. However, by the time it was time to run onto the ground, the boys had managed to focus and seemed to be switched on for a big first quarter. Our captains Mans and Marcus won the toss and decided to kick towards the Bluff Rd end and led the boys out. The… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Green vs St Bedes Mentone (R6)- Another magnificent Melbourne morning...well, not quite, but despite the cold morning the boys arrived keen to take on St Bedes / Mentone and bounce back after last week. During the week, we had a good training session and started focussing on playing in more traditional positions, particularly in the forward line, rather than forming a scrum and following the ball around. It was great to hear during our pre match talk, that the boys had remembered what they learnt at training and were keen to have a go on the field. Another ask of the team was to pick up where we left off from last week, with a focus on being first to the ball rather than watching the… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Green vs East Sandringham (R5)- Firstly a happy mothers day to all our awesome mums who help get our kids on the field each week! Mothers day turned on a magnificent Sunday morning at East Sandy, the sun was shining with no rain in sight. We knew today was going to be a new challenge for our boys who earnt the right to step up a division with a perfect start to the year. Easy Sandy were in the same position were also keen for a challenge. With Marcus, Zac and Ollie G away, we were lucky to have Alex White step into help out and he slipped into the team seamlessly and contributed well all day. Our captains for the day, HD and Jack… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Purple vs East Malvern (R4)- Another glorious autumn morning greeted us for our first game at Boss James...this weather can't last forever, but we must enjoy it while it does. I am not sure what happened in Hampton on Saturday night, but all the boys seemed a little bit crazy as we warmed up for the game, the concentration wasn't what it usually is and balls were flying left, right and centre. Malvern East promised to be our hardest opposition this year and they lived up to expectation. The first quarter was a scrappy affair as our boys took a bit of time to get used to the smaller ground across Boss James and they seemed to want to play up one side of the… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Purple vs St Kilda City (R3)- Although we had an early start this week, it was another magnificent Melbourne Autumn morning....enjoy it while it lasts! The boys arrived bright and early for our match against St Kilda City, who we played against only 4 or so weeks ago in a practice match at the same venue. The match started and it was apparent that St Kilda City were going to present our stiffest opposition to date, as they took took the ball forward in what turned out to be an even first 5 mins. However, once our boys moved the ball into the forward line they were able to control the footy. It was great to see the forwards working hard too "in defence" to lock… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Purple vs Oakleigh (R2)- Melbourne turned on a spectacular Autumn day for our first home game of the season and it was great to see the boys arrive full of excitement for our game against Oakleigh. Despite some concerns that both teams were wearing the green and the gold, the Rovers boys understood they would need to use their voices to make sure they passed to their teammate and not the opposition. The Rovers started strongly from the opening bounce with Zac winning the ball from the ruck and Leo moving it forward. Our forward line worked really hard and managed to keep the ball in the forward zone and were rewarded with multiple scoring chances. Again, we saw some great examples of players… Continue Reading...
Under 8 Purple vs East Brighton Vampires (R1)- On a day where the footy gods reminded us all that footy is a winter sport, we were greeted by a cold and wet day at East Brighton. Despite the weather, many of the boys were very excited for their first taste of Rovers footy. There were many stories of kids who were awake early and dressed in their Rovers gear waiting for the game to start. Our captains for the day were Ollie G and and Ollie H and they led the team well, particularly when it came to giving three cheers to East Brighton and the umpires as well as singing the song. There were many highlights for the day with all the boys giving their all in… Continue Reading...
