Under 8 Maroon vs Bentleigh (R8) - A hamburger walks into a bar, goes up to the barman and orders a beer. The barman looks at him, and says: “Sorry mate, we don’t serve food here….” Cue Cricket noises here..………. Now that I have your undivided attention, you have recovered from your laughing fit and picked yourself up off the floor, it is important to let you know that the U8s Rovers Maroons journeyed out to Bentleigh bright and early on Sunday morning. It was about 3 degrees and a beautiful, shimmering dew was sparkling in the bright and crisp sunlight, as it shone all over the ground. It took me back to my own junior footy playing days in Yarrawonga. Wet ball, wintry chilly mornings, freshly Continue Reading...
Under 8 Maroon vs Caulfield Bears (R7) - Scene: Psychiatrist Rooms, Hampton, Victoria Ben “Dimma” Pickett is attending his 5 am appointment (he couldn’t get in at any other time) with Dr Vanessa Mindful – known to all as Ness Mindful….and a world renowned leader in her field…..the reason why the term “Mindfulness” is now the corporate and social buzzword of the day…..her mantra of “you look after your oversized mind and we’ll look after your oversized payment” is globally famous…. “The Bears….the Bears……I can’t them out of my mind, Doc, all day, every hour, every minute….it’s like a nightmare….” “Now, now, Ben….” “Can you please call me Dimma? Rohan likes that – no one really calls me Ben anymore. Well Mum does, but that’s more “Benjamin”, when Continue Reading...
Under 8 Maroon vs St Peters (R6) - The Frost The wind it blows cold on the oval, so green The frost it does glisten, and has a soft sheen So bright and so lovely, when exposed to the sun And eventually the grass and the frost become one The hours tick by – it is Sunday you know A morning for sleeping, but some just don’t know The Rovers’ Maroons have jumped out of bed And jumped on their parents – sometimes on their head “It’s match day!” they cry as they run and they shout As they make their big breakfast – a mess all about The bags they do grab – all green and all yellow Their mood it is light! And certainly not mellow Continue Reading...
Under 8 Maroon vs Mordi Brae (R5) - Ring, ring…..ring ring…ring ring….. “Good morning, AFL – Gil speaking” came the voice over the phone…. “Gil!!! How are you mate? It’s Sheeds…” “Sheeds! Great to talk! Gee I tell you it’s tough in here at the moment, I need a hug I reckon. Tell you what mate, I am gunning for you for the Legends Hall of Fame. By the way, well done on the ANZAC game again the other week! “Um….Gil….” “No, no, don’t be modest! I made a fortune out of…sorry, it was really well attended and a credit to you! It’s so great for our bottom line….I mean for the fans – they really support it brilliantly!” “Gil – it’s not that Sheeds, it’s Rohan “Sheeds” Continue Reading...
Under 8 Maroon vs Beaumaris (R4) - Rohan “Sheeds” Bardwell was sitting at his kitchen table. It was 6 in the morning. In front of him, he had whiteboards, magnets, coloured markers and the much-loved coloured wrist bands strewn everywhere on the table in front of him. His head was in his hands and he was staring vacantly at his new yellow, blue and red wristband mural on the wall that he had made and put up just last week. Liz, his lovely wife, concerned for her husband, came out and asked, “Rohan – are you ok? It’s so early! Are you worried about today’s game when the Maroons play Beaumaris2?” “That’s part of it, my darling” he responded with a sigh. “But the real issue is Continue Reading...
Under 8 Maroon vs Beaumaris (R3) - I opened my eyes. Sunday. Great! My thoughts immediately turned to football…..I was excited. Not because the mighty Tigers were going to be playing the arch enemy at the home of football that afternoon in front of 90,000 screaming fans. Oh no. Not even close. It was the thought of the mighty U8s Maroons strutting their stuff at their own home of football, Castlefield Reserve – this thought alone made me bound out of bed and into the day….. And so there we all came to be – gathered at 8.20am (for those who are able to generally enjoy a sleep in – bright and early – for some of us this was probably quite late) at Castlefield for the Continue Reading...
Under 8 Maroon vs Cheltenham (R2) - Much calmer, albeit slightly foggy conditions greeted players, coaches and parents as Hampton Rovers Maroon travelled the 15 minutes from “home” to play Cheltenham JFG on their home deck. Certainly more acceptable than driving rain and a chilly wind, many parents were saying….! The kids were all on time (thanks parents!) and were very excited to see if they could continue the 100% win ratio as they moved into Round 2 of the season. Caitrin Moore and Charlie Ratcliffe were captains for the day, and proudly led the team onto the field. Rohan “Sheeds” Bardwell had his first major challenge of the year, being advised by Cheltenham pre-game that they only had 16 players. Rohan handled this with aplomb, directing Continue Reading...
