Are the school holidays over yet? Is everyone coming back to winter?
This week saw us up against the Beaumaris Sharks. Another team we face where some of the boys come up against their school mates.
We started with 16. Thanks to Mason and Ethan from the under 9s we got to 18. James was welcomed back with the Captaincy alongside Jake S. Conditions were cold and threatening to brew a storm but thankfully it held off.
We lost the toss and were kicking into a stiff breeze. The boys took on our instruction, with great results, to aim the ball at the far side of Castlefield. Mitch got us on the board first with a great non preferred right foot goal. Ben W was great providing a lively target up forward and his hard work resulted in another big goal into the breeze. Mason was great as a little crumber in the forward line. Jake set up his teammates in the middle and worked brilliantly both ways to again cement his sweeper role. Deserved winner of my coach’s award this week. At the break the Sharks were scoreless and the breeze was getting harder.
The second term saw all of the big guns get involved in the contest. Huddy was racking them up and booting the ball 35m to our forward line. Harry went forward and snagged a great goal. Jimi was in and under and kept the forward pressure on. A big improver in our side this year has been Matt C. Works his butt off and is involved in many forward assaults. Will finished off the quarter with a great left foot goal to see us into half time with a comfortable lead.
Giddy was everywhere in the third term and insured the Sharks were not going to get past him at half back. Nate J played up with us again and continues to fit in well with our team. Ryan was getting plenty of clearances with some hard running in the middle. Isaac was providing great run as the mobile ruckman. Wes was great in the hotspot role and Mitch found the big sticks again with our only goal for the quarter. Mary had to run over the other side of the ground for an injury and did it very well. Graham was only giving messages if it was on the near side boundary line as this week’s runner.
We finished off the game with plenty of run and energy. Will kicked his second looking like he’d just walked off the beach. Mikey was great in close holding up the opposition run with some great tackling. Max dashed off half back with confidence and booting it our way with the breeze. James started to look more comfortable in the second half after a long break. Ethan was great in the last quarter and was stiff not to get a goal.
We were consistent throughout the match and was very pleasing game to win.
We are up against East Malvern this week in what will provide another big challenge.
Hopefully we have a full list to choose from !
Go Hampton Rovers – best mates!
Cheers Wayno
