We rocked into Castlefield for the early afternoon game against the Brighton Beach outfit. This team has been a big improver this year notching wins against St Bedes and Prahran. Chris was keen to have the boys switched on and ready from the first bounce after some slow starts.
Mikey and Ben W were our captains for the day and led us out onto the perfectly sized and wide open spaces of Castlefield reserve.
We were backed by a 2-3 goal breeze after the boys won the toss. The midfield were getting the ball deep into the forward line. Gideon was marking anything that came near him which was a highlight of his game. Benny W got us off with a “package” special. The pocket rocket, Jimmy, got on the end of a long entry and weaved his way into space to put through his 1st goal for the club. The boys were relentless and Hudson was the general down back racking up the clearances. Mitch was providing a target and was presenting well. Ryan took a great mark and went back and slotted a nice goal. Jody followed up with our 4th for the term and we held a nice lead.
We had a really good tussle in the 2nd quarter. Charlie and Ethan held up the opposition and would not let go of the ball at any stage when they tied up the contests. Kaden was finding some space and used the ball well. Harry ended up without any air in his lungs after a big fly. Our goal for the quarter came in typical Wes style running around a few defenders and finished off nicely.
The 3rd term we had the use of the breeze but couldn’t convert. It had died down somewhat but we knew the Brighton Beach boys would also come out with their best set up. Nate and Jake were important in the middle and Kian pit a stamp on the game by playing the sweeper role out the back of the contest perfectly. Jack loves it down back and continues to be the strength down there with his poise and timing. Jimmy hit the post in his second crack at a goal and we had a nice little advantage heading into “snake” quarter time.
We just needed to run out the game and head off any early challenges. Benny H let his intentions be known early in the last with continued tackling excellence. It was good to see the boys put a side away early. Max told me on Saturday that he would kick 2 goals and seal the contest. So he thought he may as well do exactly that. Two rippers and it was put out of reach. Ben W added his 2nd for the game as did Wes to finish it all off.
A great 4 quarter performance earned us the right to belt out the song and earn some well-deserved praise from coaches and parents alike.
This week see us come up against Caulfield.
Go Hampton Rovers- best mates!
Cheers
