The game was moved to a 1.15pm start so we could play on a full ground. This side got the jump on us earlier in the year. The weather was threatening to dump. We had 18 due to illness and even a few of the boys had pushed through illness to play, which shows some great character and strength. Captains for the day were Ben H and Huddy.
The first quarter had us kicking with a 2-3 goal breeze. The boys got a good warm up in and Trav put their minds on the job with a big rev up. The boys were not going to be moved around much and were selected in zones for their strengths. Mitch in the back was in the thick of it as always. Jimi was running hard to pick up the loose forwards. Ben H was running riot in the middle. Nate J has been brilliant filling in for us after his u8 and u9 duties are finished. He booted a great goal to get us underway. Giddy was off his deathbed to snag our 2nd for the term and we had a slight lead.
The 2nd quarter was going to test us against this great running team that East Malvern are. We tried hard to stem the flow with Jack a real general down back and is calm when challenged. Jake also holds it all together well. Matty was another one who was crook but his chase and battle to put pressure on the opposition was awesome. Kian started getting involved and growing in confidence with his ball use. Harry took mark of the year “Nick Reiwoldt” style but it was paid the other way. The lowlight of the day was Benny H putting his body on the line in a big contest. Unfortunately he looked to have sprained his ankle and had to go off. Big thanks to Mary and the first aid lady for their assistance and to Pete for taking over as goal umpire. Love his courage and he will be keen to play this week.
We came into the 3rd quarter slightly down but definitely not done with. Ryan was weaving through the defence beautifully and Kaden was having his best patches of play for the year. Isaac spent the day in the ruck and was tireless in his efforts. Michael was getting some really important contests in the middle. This resulted in Huddy kicking a big long goal. Benny W was full of run and Wes was a few times unlucky not to score majors. Huddy put us in front with another big goal on the siren.
The final term was intense and raining so my pen didn’t work to well. The boys ran out of legs and with 17 on the ground were exposed a little. They tried their guts out though and we were very competitive against a good side right up until the end.
With only 3 weeks left the season ending is fast approaching. We face 3 tough opponents and hope to have a full list to pick from this week. We’re up against the Prahran outfit, which from past experience are cracking games.
Go Hampton Rovers – best mates!
Cheers Wayno
