On behalf of Chris Leeds, myself and Chris Sando, I would like to welcome you all back to the Hampton Rovers 2017 season.
Our boys are now into their 3rd season with the club and climbing the ranks of development to the under 10 grade. The pre season (8 weeks) has once again allowed the boys to prepare for another long winter and they have shown above average improvement from where they were at the end of 2016.
As in previous years, the first 3 or 4 weeks allow the league to decide the boys are graded correctly.
Our first contest was against Mordi Braeside. The birthday boy Benny H and his mate Jack Barker were to lead the side out for round 1. Max Leeds seems to have been listening with intent in the off season. He opened up with 2 goals in the opening quarter. Will was great and the pressure on the ball carrier by Charlie and Jack was noticed. Jake walked in to his favourite role of sweeper like he hadn’t stopped over the summer.
The 2nd quarter saw us get on top and opening the floodgates early. Kaden tackling pressure and want to halve contests was amazing. We said it alot last year but it is very fulfilling for us to have the boys take direction and execute what is practised at training. Will M had 2, Giddy got 1 and Wes S had 3 which were all quality scores. James H took a screamer mark and Matty Cole in the middle was providing good pressure.
The lead ups and hitting targets was a highlight of the game. Hudson, Ben H, Mitch and Ben W all lowering the eyes rather than bombing away. Ben W backed himself in after a great mark and got one of our 3rd quarter goals. Jack Barker took the opposition on to weave some magic for another. Michael was getting the one handed pick up and kick stats. Harry W was up up and away off taking a great grab to add to his highlight reel. Charlie’s knack of getting the close handballs to teammates continues to improve.
The last quarter saw us with an unassailable lead but important to keep up the good work. The Mordi kids seemed to have had their best team sorted and got on the scoreboard and provided much more of a challenge for the boys. Oliver and Isaac were great in the middle. Kian was pumping the ball forward as the sweeper. Mitch and Ryan were combining well and Ryan kicked a ripper just before the siren. Max wasn’t happy with his first 2 so banged through another 2.
This week sees us head to Port Melbourne against Sth Melbourne. Hopefully we are as switched on for round 2. The club believe the under 10 age group is the most exciting within the club and we think the same.
Go Hampton Rovers – best mates!
