Under 10 Silver vs St Bedes (R14)

9 August 2017 by Richard Bowen

Hello Parents

The last game of the year and we were being told Armageddon weather was going to greet us. We’d been blessed with great weather majority of the year. The arctic conditions of last year still fresh in our minds, we were hoping Jane Bunn had it all mixed up. The forecast was half right. It was cold, but not arctic and it rained a little, but didn’t hail.

Captains for the day were Matty and Jake. We won the toss and kicked with a 2-3 goal wind. Benny W got us off to the start we were after and cemented his grip on the Coleman medal. Some of Huddy’s kicks felt like 35-40 m bombs. He also smashed through a ripper goal and we were away. Will was great in the middle. Harry was working hard to get in the game. Max was confined to the goal square on physio’s orders and was creating almost opportunities everywhere.

The second term saw St Bedes fight back hard but they found it difficult to score goals and Ollie and Jimi were fighting their butts off to halve the tight contests and force the umpy into ball ups. Ryan showed his courage again flying for a mark with the flight of the ball (ala Jonathan Brown) and was getting some important possys in the guts. Mikey was simply brilliant down back all day. He does a job every week and as Chris mentioned, we can’t remember how many goals he’s saved all year. Mitch was making some good plays.

We went into the 3rd term still confident we had these boys on the ropes. Jake was great in the middle. Mikey was continuing giving the little guys space. Matty was continuing his awesome season. Nate was revelling his under 10 fill ins. Charlie never gave in when the ball came his way. James showed the pace we’d missed in the mid part of the year, running down an opponent to the cheers of “BAAAALLLLLLL”. We got another big goal from Mitch Reed and at the final change we had a reasonable lead. The problem was, St Bedes are a great side and had the big wind in the final term.

The boys never gave up in the last. Jack was brilliant. Huddy was great. Mikey nearly saved the game and all the backs and mids were under the pump the entire 12 mins. Ben W and Max nearly put us back in front late and as is a trait of our side, we fought like anything until the siren.

What another amazing year of football. Just think how good these kids are going to be in the next 3-4years. Myself and Chris continue to be amazed by some of the things these boys have done on the field and they’re 10yrs old. Wow! Very proud of everyone’s efforts leading into the lightening carnival on Sunday, it’s been a great year.

Huge thanks to Chris S. He makes our team smooth. To all the parents for volunteering in various game day roles, thankyou.

Let’s go out with a bang!

Go Hampton Rovers – best mates

Cheers Wayno
