A fantastic day for Football at Castlefield, Rovers Captain for the day was Tom Kollmorgen, the Beaumaris Sharks were keen to gain revenge after the rovers previous strong record against them.
The Sharks used the opening quarter to full advantage, while we had some brilliant play in the first quarter from Dan Bevan bringing down a lion in the middle of the ground and flashes of supreme agility from Fletcher Hall resulting in Angus Gill’s first goal of three for the day, the Sharks enjoyed a 5 goal to 1 goal quarter.
The Rovers boys showed great character and realized there was work to be done. All of the boys lifted tremendously in the second quarter and tackled and chased with great purpose. Oscar Kelk showed the team true never give up spirit tackling to save a certain goal in the square, he then did it again in the game on the goal line! The Rovers found our rhythm and moved the ball swiftly scoring great team goals, winning the quarter and going into the main break within 3 goals.
The third quarter was more of the same where Anastasi Barbaras, Josh Cameron and Harrison Gibbins lead the improvement showing their dash while Josh Haines showed his determination with a very strong attack on the ball clearing it to team mates from a brilliant second effort post bump of the day resulting in another Angus Gill goal moving the Rovers even closer to the Sharks by break.
By three quarter time we had marginally improved again on the scoreboard but the sharks knew they were in for a fight.
The last quarter saw the boys pick up another level, while the Sharks hit the scoreboard with an early goal the rest of the quarter belonged to the Rovers. The running brigade were again on top and the entire team were not willing to let a ball go the wrong way from a stoppage or pack situation. We had four scoring shots in the quarter one giving Fletcher his third goal for the day. The scoreboard pressure may have seen a different result if we could have swapped a few that went behind the stick to goals. While the green and gold finished with all the running the siren sounded and the Sharks were winners by 14 points.
A very well fought out game played in excellent sporting spirit. The team are in for an exciting season!
Go Rovers!
