Hampton Rovers 8.11 (59) def. Port Melbourne Colts 1.0 (6)
We do love to be beside the seaside & a cracking July sun shone over us on Sunday at Castlefield.
It was RCD day the boys were on deck complete with Beanies supporting a great cause. Captains for the day were Zain & Josh Haines who was also celebrating his 50th game.
Before the game and being at home we recognised some additional milestones for the 50 games for Angus, Pat & Harry L
Rovers teamwork was the order of the day as the Colts are a well-coached team with great endeavour and fast ball movement.
It was a big challenge and our boys were more than up to it telling me in the break things were tough in the contest but they were loving the battle. (It nearly brought a happy tear to my eye J).
Our boys were all AWESOME, early accolades had to go to Josh C, and Fletch winning the early mid-field battle. Harry L & Josh H were making their presence felt as Liam & Jonty lifted in confidence moving the ball forward and locking it in our forward half. While we had the majority of the play the Colts were very determined and there was no easy possessions to be had. Josh C provided some excellent opportunities to Josh H & Angus from the half Forward line with Angus getting us on the board with our first Major for the day.
The second quarter started with a Colts goal and the rovers fire was lit. Josh H was a great target up forward kicking the first for the Rovers in the second followed by Fletch & Josh C also scoring goals. The intensity of all players was high with Anastasi & Harry G setting a very strong tone ensuring the wall was constantly formed and sending the ball into rovers territory with regularity.
Our running was a highlight and suited the speed of Pat, Jack and Liam who took an outstanding mark running back with the flight at the end of the quarter.
The third quarter was very congested and the rovers just wanted the ball more Josh H took a leaf out of the Tom Hawkins/ Jarred Roughhead book of tough goals and just made one happen out of a pack and was supported by Hudson who marked and goaled beautifully. The scoreboard was starting to move but the Colts were not giving an inch. They moved the ball coast to coast and as a Colt was streaming into goal he was run down by Nick White who was supported by Jonty as they forced a rushed behind. The boys then took the kick in before anyone settled and moved the ball straight into our forward half in the blink of an eye….. great running guys ACE PLAY!!!
Everyone was desperate to get the ball and support their team mates making some very solid play and keeping the Colts at bay. Hudson in his second game of the day looked like he was ready to go again after kick two rippers in the last.
A very solid team game where the boys realised they faced a great opponent and will be likely to see them again soon in the Finals.
The song was sung loud and proud with good reason.
Go Rovers!
