Under 13 Div 3 vs East Sandringham (R5)

23 May 2017 by HRJ

Cloudy Day with patches of Sun at Castlefield, Northerly Gusts.

A couple of late withdrawals through illness saw some super subs come in – Alex & Jack.

1st Qtr

This was a whole team effort.

Cassidy, up against a Boy Mountain, wins a fair share of tap outs around the ground this day. Duffin is up and about early. The Team are working together and Hampton pressure the ball forward for an early goal. Wells is continuously marking and driving forward. Whenever Zebs go into attack they are driven back by solid marking, by handball chains and tapping forward. Sometimes scrappy, always gutsy. More handballs, Griffin with promise and Rovers bundle through another. Palmer staunch in defence and Rovers are denying the Zebs any clear kicks at goal. Defence so strong. Gathercole, with his customary determination in tackles and smothers, along with Doyle, is in amongst it.
2-0-12
0-1-1

2nd Qtr

Duffin’s goal saving smother starts the quarter but Zebs get their first goal soon after. Troy valiant in close, Griffin defending well, Palmer commanding respect now. All Rovers are involved in the defensive effort, spoiling, involved in contests. Paino marking at fullback is repelling the pressure but the Zeb’s repeated sorties eventually result in another major. Cassidy wins the tap, French clicks up a gear and begins bustling opposition off the ball. Wells is tackling and scrapping forward but Rovers can’t find the big sticks this term. Rovers by a point.
2-2-14
2-1-13

3rd Qtr

Wells launches into attack, repeatedly jamming it on the boot. Doyle cannot be crossed at halfback, marking everything. Mcleish fires up, and the large crowd erupts when Paino marks in the pocket, goes back and slots one from the boundary. Gathercole is shepherding off the ball, using body to effect, Morris scores again. Cassidy to Troy to Duffin handball chain, pumped long and French takes screamer. Mcleish goals! Ball now over the neighbour’s fence! Hunt (ill) on scoreboard makes it 33 to 14. Wells wins a footrace, and the Rovers are thrilled.

Duffin is active, Haydon repels advances, another goal. Wells chasing anything that moves, the team is motoring.

4th Qtr

Team goal to start the term and Rovers are enjoying themselves. Griffin is appealing in defence, Cassidy working on the run, Wells to Duffin to Mcleish – Goal!! After Goal! The backing up, the shepherding, the running team is impressive. Gathercole now in serious work mode, Akinci roosting some big kicks forward, Mcleish to Doyle on the boil, to the marking French who offloads to Gathercole, the long kick specialist, it’s all excitement and creativity now, and Palmer scores straight through the middle! Mcleish is bursting forward, Duffin run down tackles, the Rovers are delightful and it’s fulltime!!!
