Today we came up against the league’s top side – East Malvern. From the start, it was clear our opposition had come on a mission, beating us in the contested ball and moving the ball quickly.
At half time, we trailed 5.7.37 to 1.1.7. In the second half, I put the challenge to them to keep on fighting and credit to the boys, they responded. Our second half was a lot more competitive than the scoreboard would suggest, with our boys tackling hard, winning the contested ball and playing for each other as the rain hailed down.
The final score read 9.10.64 to 2.5.17. Some individual highlights for the day: Flynn Lohan continues to get better each week and this week was rewarded with captaincy, leading the team from the front. Elsewhere, Will Saint John tackled hard all day, James Bull was again solid down back and was ably assisted by Tommy Griffin and Dion Hatziladas.
Overall, a game that we can take a lot of lessons out of as we continually look to improve.
Special mention goes to Charlie the runner who filled in for Mark, also Bryan Kirchner and Danny Ciarma just back from warmer climes, all who braved the torrential rain on the field.
Well done Rovers!
