Under 8 Yellow vs East Sandringham (R6)

30 May 2017 by HRJ

Round 6 saw a bright and early start at Castlefield. After a night of rain and wild weather, it was surprising to turn up to an almost dry ground with the sun shining for most of the game.

East Sandringham jumped out of the blocks quickly. Within a few seconds of the first bounce, the ball was in their forward line and it looked like the backs were in for a busy day. However, the defence stood up straight away with Freddie, Kit and the rest of the backline working hard to rebound the ball. Taking on Coach Julian’s advice to follow up their kicks, it quickly moved back through the midfield and was soon in our forward line. Archie took a strong mark and was unlucky not to get the 1st goal of the day, with the ball shaving the post from his shot. The boys fought hard to keep the ball locked in the forward line from the kickout. After working hard to get possession, Caelan M slotted through the first major of the game, with Caelan KF providing some great run and carry off the wing.

The 2nd quarter saw the momentum continue. Jackson B and Lucas worked hard out of the midfield to give the forwards good supply. Jackson N was strong in the forward line and with a bit of luck could have had a handful of goals for the day. Louis’ teamwork paid off, setting up Charlie for the second goal of the game. Jack and Cruz held up the fort in the backline, rebounding the ball when it got down there.

The boys had their confidence up at the halftime break. Julian was impressed with the boys’ performance so far, rallying the troops to play out the whole game in the same vein as they had in the first half. His inspiration worked and like all great leaders, his team got behind him and followed his orders. Kai was strong in the middle, marking and kicking the ball well and taking the play on. Harry and Ashton both had a strong quarter also, laying tackles and getting plenty of disposals. Some great passages of play resulted in 2 goals, with Angus helping to hold the ball in the forward line. Cooper’s goal came from a great mark. Will took the defence on, only to have his shot smothered. He then backed it up by chasing down the ball- this time kicking the goal. By now coach Julian was standing taller and he pondered how he had raised 2 kids that would barely listen to him, yet he had managed to get 21 seven & eight year old boys to follow his word.

The final quarter saw the boys continue their strong teamwork. It seemed like everything had just clicked. Cooper and Eddie were strong out of the middle, driving the ball into the forward line. Sebastin continued his great game, getting plenty of possessions, while Kit helped rebound the ball out of the backline. Josh had fought hard all day. He was finally rewarded with a great goal. Josh’s goal capped off a great team game and the boys got to sing the song loudly in rooms.

The boys all then door-knocked the streets of Hampton, collecting $472.30 for the Red Shield appeal which was a nice way to finish off a great morning.
