One of the main reasons why I wanted this role as a coach for the second year was to see these boys grow, not only in height but in maturity and compare their learning skills to last year. I can honestly say these boys have come a long way and continue to impress and learn from week to week.
The weekends score line shows a pretty one sided match – but this was not the case. The boys played extremely well all across the ground and it wasn’t until mid-third quarter when we lost a couple of boys to injury and their forward pressure became too much for our defence but also defensive errors (which was one of our major issues the week before) became our major issue again.
This week again we played against a side that did not rotate their players – So I would be happy to get feedback from the parents and the boys on how, now that we have been regraded and moved up to a high intermediate group, is the best way that these boys are going to not only enjoy their footy, but respect each other skills and quickly learn the importance of why working as a team and following instructions can lead to success – not only on the field, but at school and eventually in life.
Bradley and Lachlan were our captains and both had very good games. Our back line was under pressure from the first bounce – Jack, Patrick, Daniel, Finn and Sebastian all stood strong at back with Domenic been nominated to do the kick outs made some strong clearances with his massive kicks.
Bradley, William, Mason, Lachlan and Campbell in the center all cleared the ball well, made space to run in from our kicks from defence to our forwards with Sunny using his strength and height as our nominated ruck.
Ethan, Luca, Sonny, Josh and Hugo all provided plenty of opportunities up forward but unfortunately with no results (against a strong breeze that our kicks could not quite make their targets), Joseph never stopped trying and playing one of his best matches to date.
Harvey started off on the bench and was great in the forward when he came on.
In the second quarter, when I rotated the group to their new positions, was the moment we noticed a big swing their way. Their mids, forwards and defence all got on top and really made a difference though-out the ground for the next 2 quarters. This week we have a bye but we will train and go through the game in a bit more detail like we did last week. So, come prepare to listen and learn for ways we can improve and achieve success as a group for the remaining of the season.
