What a beautiful Autumn day today and what a magnificent start to the season for the Sandy Rovers.
Div 3 had a terrific 6 point win against Beaumaris with only the bare 18 players for the entire second half. Gutsy and inspirational. Well done boys.
Div 1 today had a convincing 73 point win over AJAX, but more important than the result was the way the team played…spread wide and fast; USE the ball wide and fast; quick, linking handballs; one two’s; play the way we face; strong tackles; running bounces; strong marks.
We asked for some flair today and we got plenty: Tom Maginness running and bouncing through the middle, Miles’ one handed mark and then play on and goal, Luke Ianuali’s strong pack mark in the last quarter and conversion for his 4th goal, Campbell Tweedie’s running bounces out of defence, Zac’s leap for a screamer followed by his recovery to run away with the footy, Boysy’s creative passes across the ground…there were plenty more…and it was exciting. The most pleasing part was that we wanted the flair combined with discipline and structure…and we got it.
We didn’t hit every target but most importantly we had a crack at switching the ball wide and running past and rewarding the runner and handballing back when in trouble…and when we did hit a target, wow, it looked just fantastic.
Some of the passages of play were scintillating and so enjoyable to watch.
There was not one weak link today…Well done boys…we are proud of you all.
Let’s make sure we don’t get ahead of ourselves, that was a terrific performance but in reality it is one win against a team that has come up from Div 2 last year. We still need to work on our defence after a turnover…the rebound nearly hurt us on several occasions…so let’s get to training on Wednesday at Castlefield at 6pm – 7.30pm and keep working hard…Cheltenham-Highett next week!
Well done to all of the new boys today…Tom McKinley, Will Nolan, Liam O’Driscoll and Matthew Young in Div 3 and Luke Hart and Campbell Tweedie in Div 1 (oh, and welcome back Nick Van Der Linden…almost a new boy!)…you were all terrific today and I hope you were all made to feel welcome.
I was excited today!
