What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than dragging yourself out of bed early to cook the bacon & eggs, shower mum with love & gifts then get to a delightful Como Park on a crisp 10 degree morning.
We were again working against injury & illness lining up against the competition’s top side one short. Josh Cameron after a sterling start to the season was captain for the week. The entire team have been working very hard on defensive pressure across the ground and kick out structure. We knew against the top side our best effort was required.
There is no doubt as soon as the ball bounced this week the Rovers were up for a big contest on the huge surface of Como Park. Teamwork and attack on the ball was first class and the Prahran boys were back footed by our endeavour in every position on the ground. Harry Lewis, Harry Gibbins, Anastasi and Arthur all provided great highlights in the first quarter continually leading the contest and moving the ball to Rover advantage up the ground. Nick White was asked to take on more responsibility and lead the kick in duties as trained on Friday night and he could not have done a better job (Thanks Nick!). As a team we will continue to practice the kick in tactic which will continue to improve our ability to get the ball forward.
At half time the scoreboard was deadlocked thanks to a great long distance Josh Haines goal and some strong forward pressure by Pat, Liam & Angus. In the third quarter the boys were again each inspirational lifting to win every contest. Arthur chasing down the wing and laying a great tackle stopping a quick ball into the Prahran forward line was a great defensive highlight. Teamwork spurred on by Josh & Fletch saw the ball moved down towards Angus who made no mistake with a great third quarter goal for the Rovers seeing us 2 points behind at 3 quarter time.
Again the fast Rover ball movement and ability to take the game on was a credit to the team and also praised by the famous opposition coach (Nathan Buckley) who was also full of praise for the teamwork our boys portrayed in a one on one chat we had in the carpark post-match. In the last quarter Fletch, Harry Lewis & Josh C seemed to be everywhere evident by the scoring shots and forward pressure giving us the lead for the first time in the match.
Late in the quarter Prahran were able to manufacture a goal putting their nose in from at the final siren. Our boys seemed quite down about the result but when Nathan Buckley called them in for a special chat and told them how impressive they were and “not to worry about the score because this team will sort itself out” that tells us that we are heading the right way. Footy is more than wins and loses and this team is seriously improving every week learning new tactics every game and becoming a terrific team unit.
The Coaches and Support group are very impressed by the growth of all of the boys. Our Footy Journey continues.
Go Rovers!
