I’m sure we were all up nice and early Sunday morning to do lots of great things for all of our mothers. The anticipation of school stall purchases is at its greatest on Mother’s Day.
Then it was off to Highett where the boys were up against cross suburb rival, East Sandringham @ Peterson Reserve. This day was going to test our depth and fitness as we were without Jack B and Isaac, withdrawals before the game and Ben W also under the weather. Mitch and Ollie were our Captains for the day.
We bounced out of the blocks with Ollie getting it out to Ben H for a great running goal to get us on the board. The assistant coach is pretty happy with the way Ryan is sharing the ball and hitting targets. He’s also hitting the scoreboard this year and got a sneaky one off hands in the goal square. Michael was relishing being given plenty of room up forward kicking 2 majors for the quarter. It also saw him being the first to point out his mother ( Jeanine ) in the crowd. We held a comfortable advantage heading into the quarter time break.
The second term saw us extend this advantage. The boys were linking up nicely through the middle. Harry was leading by example in the thick of it. Huddy and Matt C were also using each other well. We piled on another 3 goals for the term. Wes was also rising above illness putting through a goal. Will had plenty of shots but they were swinging wide. Giddy was outstanding with two and Kaden and Olly were great in creating opportunities. They were both very close to hitting the goals as well.
Half time oranges were delivered by Pete Jongen, however a rookie mistake saw him let loose a pack of snakes too early! I’m sure he won’t fall for that one again as they were devoured in seconds! We lost Max and Ben W to injury/illness and it was going to be tough to run out the 2nd half with 17 fit players.
The boys were running themselves ragged, competing for every contest with grit and desperation. James was looking to give us some run in the second half. Harry took a customary screamer or two but honours for mark of the day went Nate Jongen. It was great to have Nate step up for his 3rd match after under 8 and 9 commitments earlier in the day. We conceded a goal in the term with East Sandy having more run in them. Our bench was getting a workout with rotations and positional change to keep the run in the legs.
The last quarter saw another tight one. For the first time of the year, we were outscored against for the half. Jake was killing it coming back from a 2 week hamstring and settled back into the fold nicely. Kian had his best quarter of the year. When Kian gets his confidence up and puts himself into every contest he is very damaging. Charlie had two or three important touches by his usual handballing, but it was also great to see him get a few kicks as well. Mitch kept the challenges at bay putting through the sealer. He also pointed out his mum ( Tracey ) in the crowd to wind up a great Mother’s Day performance.
At the time of writing we’re yet to know of our round 5 opponent or fixture. Standby for Sando’s updates with regard to our next fixture.
Go Hampton Rovers – best mates.
Cheers
