Under 12 Girls Purple vs Waverley Park Hawks (R2)

23 April 2018 by HRJ

Wow, so much to say, so little time…. Here goes.

With perfect conditions and a slight north-east-westerly coming from the south, we gathered around the team demountables and wheelie bins to hear Callum wax lyrical about last weeks spreading, running smart, reading where the ball is and kicking and running. The now suitably pumped girls, led by this weeks Captain Matilda, ran onto the pitch ready for round two.

The first quarter was a sign of what was to come with conscientious passing great tackling by Squiz, and Maddy scoring our first goal. Amelia scored a behind and showed that she meant business in her second and final game with the girls. The second goal was another one next to Maddys’ name that wouldn’t have happened without solid teamwork from Mia S, Lily and Squiz.

The second quarter started with giggling in the Ruck, yep, you read it right, GIGGLING! Fortunately the girls remembered that THIS IS FOOTY and just like there are no tears in footy, there is no giggling either. Matilda snapped out of it first and cleared the ball down to Mika for a goal. Then Lenni got it to Shanti who got it out of the midfield to Captain Matilda where she felt her first sling tackle and laughed in the face of the opposition! Rumour has it someone heard her say “is that all you’ve got?” (after she got up obviously), but that can’t be confirmed. Which is good enough for me!

More amazing teamwork brought another goal to Mika. Then Elicia got rewarded for her tenacity with a behind. A sweet little handball from Mika brought Elicia the goal she wanted and deserved.

ORANGE TIME! Or was it? Yep it was, I was just testing. The coaching team split the girls into two and then Callum wrapped it up with “Pretty incredible so…… Keep doing what you’re doing.”

Mia S saved a goal then cleared it to Maddy and before we knew it Shanti had scored a goal. Batman kicked the ball AT Lenni and while we were still chuckling at that Squiz scored a goal, another rushed behind (that’s my way of saying I think it was Shanti but even when I asked her she wasn’t sure SO BACK OFF ALRIGHT – I CAN’T DO EVERYTHING!!) I am sure however, that the next goal was Shanti’s. The restart was something else and brought the most dramatic moment of the game.

The Hawks were fired up and having a crack at getting it out of the Midfield in an attempt to get some points on the board when there was a crashing tackle on one of their players. Here’s where it turned to custard. Impressively Penny didn’t rain down hell on the 11 year old girl and Gary managed to restrain me too. While I was still reeling, Squiz had moved on and Shanti got another behind. Then Lizzie charged down the kick out and scored a goal.

The last quarter was a blur of passes, teamwork and goals by Lottie then Squiz and two from Maddy. Apparently we’re too good for behinds now. I know this is all sounding very one sided but the Hawkes had some top notch moments too (Brain Snap excluded) 18 was amazeballs and some of their tiniest didn’t hesitate to take on the likes of Mia S and bring them down.

Kenno, filling in as team manager for the Gathercoles – who were deterred by the horrendous commute – decided that rather than follow my recommendation, which would inevitably be redacted anyway, chose to get an apology for Squiz over an official report.

Ultimately, the result was a resounding 82-0 victory, an apology for Squiz, a very proud coach and sadly, the departure of the same girls we welcomed just last week. We’ll miss you girls.

B.O.G went to Shanti and awards for Eloise (Squiz), Maddy and Amelia.

I would also like to point out that I wore hole-free pants, straightened my hair and wore a snazzy hat, next week I pledge to wear an entire outfit that’s hole free. But enough about me, what did you do for your team today?
