Sunday 29th of April had our round 3 fixture placing us at Peanut Farm Reserve, squaring off against a somewhat undermanned St Kilda City side, which had unfortunately been forced to forfeit their 2 previous games. We also welcomed back 2 players to the SandyRovers line up, in Lachie Fraser and Aussie Parker, whose energy and commitment certainly shone through. As both sets of boys were clearly eager to play, we were able to offer substitute players to help balance the numbers and give the St Kilda City players a chance to finally get out on the field.
The game set off on a reasonably tight score line having the SandyRovers leading by just 13 into the first break. Both sides played a skilful and damaging style of footy, however a struggle to finish effectively in front of goals saw the SandyRovers kick 2 goals and 8 behinds.
The second term saw improvement with the SandyRovers transition running and defensive rebounding take a hold of the game, resulting in a 7 goal to 0 quarter and a 59 point lead going into half time. With a healthy lead, this meant the coaches were able to experiment a little with some position changes, resulting in the boys finding themselves in positions where they may not have spent too much time beforehand.
After the break the boys continued on their scoring way, however accuracy was a component eluding the SandyRovers boys for the duration of the day. Despite this and at the conclusion of the 3rd quarter, the SandyRovers held a healthy 68 point lead.
The final term showed the difference in skill and willingness in both teams as the SandyRovers pressure and clean ball movement led to a final margin of 92 points. A successful day for the Black, Green and Gold, but also for the opposition, seeming quite resolute and pleased as their boys were given the opportunity to play, despite being on the losing side.
There were many notable performances including Lachie Fraser who bagged 2 goals and led the midfield in contested possessions all day, Cooper Goulding and Ben Allen who both also snagged 2 maximums. Aussie Parker whose speed and agility gliding across the wing throughout was exceptional, Tom McKinley who paroled the half back flank and defensive midfield position without fail and Per Bellarts who was marking everything that came within his reach.
Our round 4 match places us back on our home turf against Murrumbeena this Sunday where we will look to build on the positive signs shown against St Kilda City.
Charlie Officer will play his 100th game against his old club, Murrumbeena.
