Round 8 / East Brighton Vampires 5.6.36 defeated Hampton Rovers 2.1.13
The boys can never get enough of footy. Last weekend we were lucky enough to be involved in 2 games.
On Saturday we had our first interstate clash. A Western Australian side called Wembley Downs, from Margaret River travelled over the Bite to play a few Victorian sides and see some AFL while they were here.
Both the Div 3 side and our Div 2 side combined forces to take on the WA Blues. Both teams had approximately 30 boys, so with a huge bench we played continuous rotations, and had boys playing in all sorts of positions. As it was a friendly, we just wanted the boys to have fun, and really put their training drills to the test and experience free flowing footy. We had a very good win, with goals coming from everywhere. It was not about the score though, much more about the experience and spirit of the game between two very passionate sides.
Captained by Ant Harrack and Jay Todd, on Sunday we faced the East Brighton Vampires. This slick outfit was our most serious competition so far. They came at us hard from the first bounce and their intense pressure lasted throughout the game. It is always good to be challenged, and the boys probably needed it for a dose of reality. We were forced into more of a defensive game for most of it, and in the end held them to only 5 majors for the day. A great result considering the strength of our opponents.
While it wasn’t quite the result we were after, the boys did really well, and certainly did not drop their heads. We are confident we will get them next time.
Awards: Achievement awards went to Christian Beare who is growing in confidence every week, and Harry Tuffley who bravely steered the back line. Luke Ryan took the Guts & Determination award for a fierce performance in ruck and all over the ground. Matt Gleeson was Player of the Day for brilliant performance both defensively at full back, and then a force up forward.
Goals: Matt Gleeson 1, Mitch Tuffley 1
