It was the Rovers last home and away match of the season. A blustery, frigid day, with rain predicted that never came. The Rovers kicked with the wind in the opening quarter under the captaincy of the determined and bold Riley. Some clever work by Nate, Jack, Kai and Monty in the centre of the ground, that kept pushing the ball forward to give our forwards first use of the ball.
Angus Aujard had plenty of the ball in the forward line and managed to kick 1 goal, 3 points. John Phillips’ fearless attack on the ball enabled him to slot a beautiful goal, plus a point that just missed, early in the quarter.
In the second quarter, kicking against the breeze, the Rovers were able to outscore the Vampires with some great teamwork from Jacob, Harry and Ziggy, resulting in a goal from Will Jones. Will McKeon and Ethan were busy in their zones using their strength to get the ball out to their team-mates. Zane, taking on what seemed the impossible but like always came out on top.
The third quarter, kicking with the wind once again, the Rovers really started to assert their dominance with strong work in the centre from Jacob, Will M., and Charlie. Nate had the ball on a string in the forward zone, kicking 1 goal, 5 points. Harry and Ethan also had plenty of the ball scoring 1 goal, 2 points and 1 goal, 1 respectively.
Turning for home in the fourth quarter, the boys were kicking against the wind. The Rovers collectively totally took the game by the scruff of the neck, two screamers from Charlie was a highlight. The boys continued to push the ball into the forward line where Nate scored 1 goal, 1. Reid, with some elusive play managed to kick a beautiful goal. Ethan showed aerial dominance and had his kicking boots on scoring 2 goals straight.
Having a massive win was a superb way to finish the home and away season. The boys should be proud of their achievements, and parents should be proud of their boys.
Well done and best of luck in the Lightning Carnival. Go Rovers!!!
Best: Nate, Angus A., Ethan, Jack, Kai, Harry, Will M, John & Jacob.
