Under 14 Girls Violet vs Dingley (R3)

15 May 2019 by HRJ

Well, didn’t the girls make us proud on Mother’s Day??!!

We started with a bang this week! A clean tap out by Mia S to Eloise saw Tilda take control and execute a nice play to Batman and GOAL!!! Straight into it, just like that. Back to the centre and a great tap out from Mia S again saw the ball get down to Tilda who weaved her way to the goals but unfortunately hit the post.

But then Dingley hit back, and the ball was down their end for some time. My prescription sunglasses meant that I lost sight of things quite literally and a bit of Mother’s Day haze wafted over me.

Anyway, by the end of the first quarter it was even-stevens; both teams with two goals and a point. The scorers were commenting on the even field, and excited with the prospect of a good match on our hands.

But the second quarter was slooooow. Dingley kicked a goal and we managed a few points. The girls lacked drive and the scoreboard showed it: 16 to 20.

“More energy, more pressure!!,” bellowed the coaches at half time. “You’ve got to play on!”

It has to be said that the girls fired up a little in the third term, with some good marks and what looked like a group hug rather than a tackle at one point near goals. Even Pete Flockart was looking for a bit more action, only having to use his whistle once as boundary umpire. Bowie, my dog, wouldn’t stop mounting poor Banjo (sorry Banjo) so I was a little distracted too.

Anyway, all was not lost. The final quarter saw the girls lift! Some wonderful kicks, marks and handballs, with a touch more aggression and accuracy, had us screaming from the sidelines. Gathers let out of few LOTTAS too!!! The Hampton girls certainly did us proud with a 19-point win: 5.10-40 to 3.3-21. Imagine if we’d turned those points into goals.

The girls belted out the song in the changeroom. More rousing words from the Coach Callum and Coach Josh, and calls to “pump each other up” next week. BOG to Eloise and awards to Mia S and Liv for fearless play.
