Another sunny afternoon greeted us at the ‘big’ ground, Toorak Park. It was also another quagmire in the middle of the ground. Classic 1970’s mud patch.
Wes S was out captain for the day and we seem to have nailed the positive starts. It might be time for the coaches to get us motoring home in the back end of games now.
The first half was as good as we’ve played all year. We lacked a little bit in the aerial contest in the first quarter. Quick chat at quarter time and that wasn’t an issue anymore. The boys are almost listening to all messages at the breaks…almost! Keegan M looked great on top of the ground and kicked 2 beauties. Wes S started forward and was rewarded for another courageous mark with his first goal for the year. Harry W came on and instantly read the ball perfectly. Jake S backed himself in for 2 great marks and clearances. The pressure was brilliant. Freddie S tackling and shepherding was important. Ollie E is understanding that he can own the space between half forward and half back. Ollie S was at his usual hard running self, getting to repeated contests. He got on the end of the play of the day between Ryan P and Harry B. They shared the ball brilliantly resulting in Ollie’s goal. The marking skills if Sandro M and Gideon Z was on full display. Mikey P and Max L combined for a good clearance down back and Keegan got on the end of another to have 3 by half time.
Zac M had a run on the ball in the 2nd half and along with Matty B, continue to be a linking chains with run and precise kicking skill. Ben H and Harry B were doing the small man hard running thing with the latter kicking a goal on his favoured left boot to give us a good break. The Prahran we have all known since under 8’s were going to come at us. They had an amazing ball winner (Josephine – well done Prahran, she was awesome) who would be the best I’ve seen play in juniors. Mitch R was switched back and his long kicking saw us get it back in our half. Huddy J and Charlton T were handling our tall timber work. They both have to do a fair bit around the ground with their height. Ben W appears to have his run back and was giving us some chances and Oscar M seemed to find himself booting it out of the mud more than his mother would’ve liked. A few of the boys were properly filthy.
We hung on for a 13pt win after leaking 3 goals in the last half. This week we face East Malvern away. Another opportunity to become better and play together.
Go Hampton Rovers – best mates
Cheers
