On a cold muddy Sunday afternoon, we ventured off to play St Paul’s McKinnon who had lost only one game for the season. Earlier in the year, l think we played our best game of year against them at Boss James and went down by only 1 point, so we were upbeat in putting on another solid performance.
For the first time in a while we had a single player on the bench which helped with rotations. Oliver & Dan Smith were our captains due to the “Survivor Swimming challenge” on Friday night.
In the first quarter, kicking against a strong wind and with the ground on a slight hill which we were also against, keeping St Paul’s to just 2 goals was a great effort.
During the second and third quarters, the game was hard to watch due to the conditions as our boys continued to fight and show great courage against a top opposition. The game was never more than 2 goals apart.
In the final quarter, we pushed hard with the wind and dominated the first 10mins and got within a single point. Unfortunately St Paul’s scored a goal against the run of play with only a minute left which resulted in yet another close heartbreaking loss.
Great performances this week came from Sonny who put in an amazing 4 quarter performance across half forward, Tristan applied pressure down back and on the wing, Theeran was super in defence, Chris yet again showed a lot of heart in the ruck in the second half and Fletcher played multiple roles for the team with success. Tom H, Campbell & Jack C all got on the goal kicking list again and Harry and Jade played strong games in the midfield with Oliver putting his body on the line.
