President’s Report – May 2020

12 May 2020 by Rohan Bardwell

Watching and waiting

If you are anything like me, you’ve been watching the news (and the occasional press conference), sitting on the edge of your seat…watching…waiting…waiting…for some news on when we can get back to The Boss.

From the beginning, we’ve been committed to ensuring the safety of our players, our coaches, our volunteers and our broader playing community. I am stoked that the country is doing an awesome job of ‘flattening the curve’ and kicking COVID-19 to the curb. I was also highly encouraged by the PM’s 3 step plan to get Australia (and community sport) moving again.

While the Federal and Victorian governments have eased COVID-19 restrictions over the last few days, the SMJFL have advised that formal training, practice matches and social functions are, and will remain, suspended until formally notified otherwise.

From the Hampton Rovers Committee’s position, this also includes unsanctioned training that may be considered with the easing of restrictions. We must be patient and adhere to the SMJFL guidelines. In addition the Club still doesn’t have formal access to the Boss James or Castlefield grounds from the Council.

The exciting news is the SMJFL is currently working on a framework based on advice from the AFL and the recently-released information for resumption of community sport by the Australian Institute of Sport. Hopefully we will back and playing games before we know it.

We are committed, once we have the green light, to get as many games in for our players as possible. Once we have the go ahead from the SMJFL, and a more complete picture, we will be in contact quickly with what the season fixture looks like and teams being finalised. We are committed to being open and transparent every step of the way.

Until then, there 3 things that I ask:

  1. Encourage your kids use our great training videos and drills to keep their skills
in top shape, adhering to government guidelines
  2. Check if the footy boots in the wardrobe fit, and
  3. Donate to the Red Shield Appeal via the Hampton Rovers Digital Doorknock

We appreciate everyone’s patience and it won’t be long before we are back on the
grounds.

See you soon

Rohan Bardwell
Juniors President
