Under 14 Div 1 vs St Bedes Mentone (R10) - With the Winter months closing in, and most of the squad back, we went down to Boss James with optimism last Wednesday night for training. We were met with howling wind and the Sherrin going more sideways than forward. After an hour of running, close quarter handball and pressure acts, it became apparent we needed to focus on IP and static cardio/body weights. Long kicking was going to be a waste of time in these conditions. Christian, Big O and Zac took the lead and the boys had me laughing at their efforts with planking and push-ups. Fast forward to Sunday morning and the boys walked in a little slow, a few yawning. I had yelled at my two to… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 1 v Mordi Brae (R9) - With the Sun-lovers still away, drinking free cocktails and reminding me all about it with photo evidence at every opportunity we went into the Round 9 game against Mordi Brea knowing it might come down to the last 30 seconds of the game. I was very nervous knowing that we had a number of boys that had already played 4 quarters in the earlier game. Well done to Jordy, Brody, James, Charlie, Lucas and Ben D. Special Big Congrats to Charlie for playing his first D1 game in the Green and Gold. We kicked against the breeze in the first quarter, Mordi were up and about, linking and running. They kicked 2 goals then Charlie took a nice mark, played… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 1 vs Port South Melbourne (R7) - Sunday morning, I received news that 3 lads were pulling out due to various issues, mainly sickness. We had Jules and Lach coming in, which pleased me greatly. I should have left 10 minutes earlier as getting a park at Murphy field was no easy task. Graham had the boys all warming up and the white board showed us with only two on the pine. Fast forward 60 minutes of game time and I was a very proud coach. Some rain in the 1st quarter made the ball a little slippery. We didn’t adapt quick enough and still tried to play a tight handball/ high possession game, this led to two goals the opposition got through our turnovers. We outworked… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 1 vs Beaumaris (R6) - It takes 4 quarters to beat a good team that will play finals like the Beaumaris Sharks, at half time the score was Rovers 7 Sharks 20, we were in the game, the Sharks poor kicking had given us some life. In the second half Big O rearranged the deck chairs, Cecil went forward, Max went to CHB, Ben and Josh came to the party in the second qrt and we started to win more contested ball. We looked good in patches not like the previous week against East Malvern. It’s a learning thing, we said we would go harder for longer, this didn’t happen although we outscored them by a point after half time. Plenty to like about our… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 1 vs East Malvern (R5) - Making Cecil ‘Captain for the Day’ was the best move I have made coaching in a long time; his game was from the very top shelf in every way. Before I go on, a big shout out to our Captain, Archie who plays D1 U14 interleague on Wednesday night against Yarra league, then over the Queen’s birthday weekend. All the best Tractor. The conversation in the car to the ground was interesting. My lads were confident. I wasn’t my deep-thinking self, I was relaxed and keen to see where we were at. D2 to D1 has always been a jump. I knew our lads would be competitive. Our day started interestingly given mass confusion with what oval we were playing… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 2 vs Waverley Park Hawks (R4) - First, congratulations to all members of the Under 14 squad: players, TM’s, coaches, parents, supporters. As always, our initial phase in any season is to have fun in a safe, harmonious, respectful and educational environment. Our aim with the D2 team was to gain promotion back to D1. Mission accomplished. Our aim with the D4 team is to be as competitive as possible and for all boys to receive great coaching and a strong environment to develop. I feel watching both games Sunday the squad has come a long way since our mid-February training runs. The boys looked and acted a little restless on Sunday for our early start away. Even the coach was unprepared. I always go check out… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 2 vs St Peters (R3) - My concern with our group going into round three was how we might turn up mentally following a 14 goal win the week before. I spoke to the players about this and we worked extensively below the knees pre-game to highlight how we might lack focus against a hungry St Peters. My concern was alleviated 40 seconds into the contest, Alex to Tractor, Tractor to Kento, long range kick, scramble, goal, like the week before the boys had turned up to play. Nico and Xavier came into the team at the expense of Dylan and Max, both injured. The back six in the first quarter were tight, Jules and Kai mopping up, Mateo offering good run. Jackie G went on… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 2 vs Brighton Beach (R2) - Rovers 12-12-84 def Brighton Beach 0-4-4 Firstly, a shout out to everyone’s mate, Maxy Carroll, Max suffered a wrist injury Sunday and will miss a few weeks, not great for Max or our team as he is in good form. The squad trained real well last Wednesday night, Christian, Zach and Big O noticed how invested the boy’s minds were, this normally means they are switched on for Sunday. I noted that a few boys didn’t play school footy for BGS on the Saturday, I felt they might be saving themselves for a huge game against school mates that play for BBJFC. Each week I go and look at the away venue to get a look at how it is… Continue Reading...
Under 14 Div 2 vs Ajax (R1) - How fantastic that footy is back! Six months sitting around waiting for round one 1 to arrive…while the surf, sun, basketball and BBQ’s are all good, footy is the one sport that pulls the community together like no other. Our lads had a great preseason, with several lads seen out doing extras; Lucas R, Kento, Lachlan and Ted Mac have been noticeable with running and general skill sessions. This pleased me with the hope it might rub off on the majority. Prior to the game we talked about the WE NOT ME mentality. We noted the clear size advantage to Ajax in warm up. We would hopefully share the load and rely on our training, ball movement and speed on… Continue Reading...
