SMJFL focus on alternative footy season
Dear Rovers players and families,
While it has been said a lot can happen in a week of football, it is fair to say that even more can happen in times of a global pandemic. I truly hope everyone is staying safe and all our players are doing their best to keep their football skills up by accessing the fantastic videos developed by our great coaches.
As everyone would have seen, COVID-19 cases have risen to worrying levels in Victoria. While the Victorian Government is focused on bringing the situation under control, and hopefully easing restrictions towards the end of August, the SMJFL anticipates it will be some time before traditional football matches could recommence, even once restrictions are eased.
Therefore, the SMJFL has announced this morning that our footy season will not proceed in a traditional format in 2020.
The SMJFL will continue to consult with member clubs over the coming weeks with the hope of offering optional, alternative programs if and when Government restrictions allow. This may include lightening carnivals, AFL9s, school holiday games, round robins and intra-club matches.
We, like you, are devastated that our traditional footy season won’t take place in the way that we are used to. However, the Hampton Rovers Committee supports the SMJFL’s decision and we are now focused on getting some football back into the lives of our players, one way or another.
Now that we have better clarity on the near future, the Hampton Rovers Committee will meet next week to discuss:
1. Recommendations to the SMJFL on alternative programs, and
2. Financial status of the club and refunds or credits for members.
We appreciate that times are tough for many families right now. That is why we want to discuss these two areas as quickly as possible so that we know how our players can still stay engaged with footy, while also acknowledging individual financial situations. If you, or other families, are experiencing financial hardship as a result of COVID-19, please get in touch.
I’d like to thank every family for the encouragement that you have shown us during this time and all of our players who have kept their chins up and displayed their #RoversPassion. I’d also like to thank all of our sponsors who have stuck with us during this unprecedented time. I know that every Rovers family will continue to support our sponsors just as they have supported us.
Again, I share your disappointment that our 2020 football season won’t eventuate as we had hoped. We will be in touch next week with further updates.
Until then, please stay at home and stay safe. We’re in this together.
Go Rovers
