President’s Report – Anzac Day ‘Lest We Forget’

22 April 2021 by Rohan Bardwell

Hello Rovers Families,

After what seems like an eternity, it was fantastic to have football back properly last weekend. The weather held up and I managed to get to a number of games over the weekend. It was wonderful seeing kids from all ages out on the grounds having much needed fun with their mates… hearing cheers and sirens in the distance throughout the day was music to my ears. It’s great to have community footy back!

This weekend’s games fall on Anzac Day – Sunday 25 April. It is an opportunity for all to reflect on the spirit of the Anzacs and commemorate those who fought and died for our freedoms. We all chose to reflect in a different way on this day of remembrance. This may be a candle at the end of the driveway at dawn, attending the Melbourne Dawn Service (if you were lucky enough to receive a ticket), participating in a local RSL service or a game of two-up.

For our home games at Castlefield and Boss James on Sunday, we will be observing one minute of silence ahead of each game. This will be an opportunity for our young players, joined by the opposition team, to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have served in the defense of our nation, and those who continue to serve today.

Back to the running of our club, and we need your help. The SMJFL has mandated that all volunteers must have a Working With Children Check (WWCC) completed to be able to support in a game day role – no matter what that role is. It’s a quick and simple process to apply, so please jump online if you haven’t already done so. Otherwise, we could end up in a situation where some games don’t have umpires, timekeepers, runners, and so on. Please help us share the load across our parents and guardians. (And once you have your details, please provide them to your Team Manager who will take care of the rest).

To all our players and teams, good luck for the weekend. Have fun and play with the spirit of the Anzacs.

Go Rovers
