Congratulations to a couple of our Under 13 boys who have been selected to represent the SMJFL at the Under 13 Interleague Carnival in June.
While Luke Nixon-Smith went through the rigorous 10 week training program (missing his beloved cricket training in the process!) to make the final cut for the Interleague D2 Team – in the leadership group no less – Ollie Horigan was scouted at the last minute when he was spotted by SMJFL coaches during the first round against Ajax. Not only that, Ollie made the Interleague D1 team. A terrific effort from both boys!
Unfortunately Ollie had a pretty nasty fall last Sunday when running onto the field and cut his knee open so deeply you could see his patella. He was promptly taken to hospital by his parents and patched up with 10 stitches. Of course kids being kids, while he was waiting to see the doctor, it didn’t stop him wondering how “the boys” were going – his Rovers team were up against last year’s Premiers. Ollie was rapt to hear that Rovers scrambled home to an exciting win – they kicked the winning goal with 2 minutes to go. Naturally the Rovers’ boys dedicated the win to their popular teammate.
Luke and Ollie are extremely excited (and a little bit shocked) to be representing Hampton Rovers but their Rovers’ Assistant Coach, Steve Marshall, isn’t surprised. “Luke is a mobile ruckman with great hands who uses his running abilities to continually move the ball forward, often roving his own knock out. He can float across a pack and take a timely grab. Ollie is a born leader, with a booming right foot and reads the play so well he takes many intercept marks with ease. A natural centre half back, he can be swung forward when needed”.
The Interleague Carnival will take place on 11 June at a venue to be decided. Good luck Luke and Ollie!
