Under 10 Blue Curtis vs St Bedes Mentone (R11)

23 July 2019 by HRJ

In the words of Shane Crawford – “That’s what I’m Talking about”. A great come from behind win for the boys. In a game that always looked like slipping away our boys showed great attitude to get one of the best wins for the group so far. Down but never out two late last quarter goals to Josh B saw the boys erupt in celebration.

On an oval that might struggle to go the distance, and at a time where barely anyone was awake this was a game to remember.

It was obvious from the beginning that St Bedes had plenty of talent. The first quarter was played pretty much in our backline and had the backs scrambling to defend. The mids were under pressure to get possession however the St Bedes boys were making life hard. St Bedes had got on the board early to a good lead at the first break.

After the boys traditional slow start and a rev from the coach at quarter time, the boys showed once again that when you work for each other, get in and help each other, run for each other, anything can be achieved.

The second quarter was again looking like it might be dominated by the St Bedes boys, but the Rovers responded late to narrow the gap at half time. A late goal for the St Bedes team was overturned by the umpire and you could feel a momentum swing to the Rovers. The coach called for more of the same, it’s up to you.

In the third the boys started to get on top and had managed to get it down to under a kick going into the last quarter. Michael called for a big effort, we are kicking to the scoring end so work hard.
One of the consistent things of this season has been the even contribution from the past medal winners continuing. The highlight has been the improvement of others with their intent and attack on the ball. This was evident again.

James D in at the bottom of the pack coming out and releasing a teammate with a fantastic handball across the forward flank. A newly fired up Joe attacking the ball on the run and clearing space for teammates (the coach has found his trigger). James J having had his confidence back to read the play again like a seasoned footballer, a fantastic effort following his return from injury earlier in the year. Well done be proud of your effort.

Tom S returned to form in running with the ball and finding good options all day. It seemed that Massimo had most of his touches while on the ground, a great sign of him wanting to get in and get the hard ball. It seemed whenever I looked, Liam had hold of the opposition in a tackle with help from Shae.

Luke worked hard in the centre as always, Harry providing a presence that no opposition under 10 wants to contend with. Josh K continued to find position in what has been a break out season. Ben awarded by the opposition for his ongoing work and great clearance rate.

In the last quarter when Josh B got the first of his 2 goals, the whole team knew they were in front. Every player right down to full back celebrated and as a result were not going to let it go. Despite St Bedes efforts the boys rallied hard, scored another and it was game over. Lets Sing!
