Under 10 Purple vs Beaumaris (R13)

1 August 2018 by HRJ

There were a few challenges leading into this week’s game. We had a couple of kids coming of injuries and quite a few who had been sick with gastro during the week. Then a few who had to drop out hours before the game. But challenges are what makes sport more interesting and overcoming them more rewarding.

With a strong wind blowing mostly straight across the ground these conditions were also presenting a challenge for the boys. We only managed to score one goal in the first but it wasn’t through a lack of shots at goal with 5 points also scored. The midfield of Paddy, Dom and Campbell kept on pushing the ball forward throughout the first half giving our forwards, led by Miles and Finn, plenty of opportunities.

As the game wore on we began to manage the conditions better. Understanding where we needed to kick the ball to give us the best chance of scoring and reading the ball better as it was being affected by the wind. During the second half Beaumaris picked up their game so it took some good running work by the likes of Hugo and to repel the Sharks.

In the end, despite all the challenges we faced coming into this game, we didn’t allow this to be an excuse to give in. We held Beaumaris to only the two points for the game and we looked strong as a team throughout.

There were four awards this and they were earned by each of the boys for very different reasons.

The first was to Alex Condon who responded to some training drills during the week by putting into action the running to space and creating an option for your teammate with the ball. As a result he was involved throughout the game picking up a number of possessions.

The second went to Sonny Gittus who is always one of the most desperate on the ground getting in and under and always fighting for possession. His tough work in our forward line this week made it hard for the Beauie backline to clear it out.

The third went to our captain for the week, Finn White, whose ruck work has developed to the point that he can tell his teammates where he wants them to stand at the ruck contests and they are going to get it most times. This week he also provided an imposing target in the forward line taking a number of marks in tough conditions.

The forth award was earned by Hugo Tuffley. Hugo has had a number of consistent performances over the past few games. He is being rewarded for the amount of running he is prepared to do in a game and his overhead marking has improved dramatically this season. This week was one of his best.

There was also a special award that was provided to recognise the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation round. The limited edition beanie was to be presented to the player who was best on ground whilst demonstrating the qualities used to describe Connor: Awesome, Determined and Committed. This award was taken out by Paddy Wilson who consistently demonstrates these qualities for us week in and week out.

Next week is the final round before the Lightning Premiership. We are up against Brighton East for the third time this year and we’re sitting at one win each. So, this is our Grand Final. It would be nice to finish the year off with a win.

Goals: Miles Cooper 2, Josh Meikle, Jack Carson, Finn White
