A rematch to Ashwood away had us looking to repeat the same result earlier this season. Our captains’ for the day, Harvey and Daniel Sm won the toss and away we went, kicking the first couple of goals and having a handy lead at quarter time. It was the best brand of football we have play the entire season.
The second quarter was a tight contest, with the ball played mostly in the midfield and wings. Seb and Dan S were holding the wings well and providing an option out wide. Tom H and Sonny G were finding the ball in close and Javier was a force in the ruck.
In the third quarter, we knew we were in for a fight as Ashwood started to apply plenty of pressure and gained the lead at ¾ time. Campbell went forward and held onto a great mark and goaled. As we started the game with no bench, the third quarter was a disaster as we had six players coming to the bench with various issues. Anthea was the most sought after person on the field. Fletcher, Jade, Sonny, Tom H, Dan S and Harvey all received some medical treatment and were brave to return to the field.
In the final term, Ashwood kicked an early goal and our boys were rightly so, running out of steam. Harry played an important role on the wing and Jade stood tall in the forward line with one sore knee. Magnus, Jack S and Raphael moved down back held strong. Oliver and Fletcher played key roles in the forward line and midfield, and both kicked well deserved goals.
In the end the result wasn’t what we wanted, however I was proud of how the boys continued to fight until the final siren. A late goal gave us a small chance of winning but the final siren came too early.
