This weekend’s game saw us come up against a team that wasn’t quite at the development level of our boys and unfortunately it was not a pretty scoreline at the end. However, the East Brighton Vampire boys can be proud that they didn’t drop their heads throughout the game. It would have been easy for them to stop trying whereas in the last quarter, despite unfortunately not kicking a goal, they held the ball in their forward line for long periods of the quarter. There is something to be learnt from that for us.
As would be expected with such a result, all our boys contributed and there were some outstanding individual efforts. Jake stood out being on the end of six goals, Jody was hard at it all day and Hugo again provided options with his run. Our award winners on the day were Alex C, Declan R and Sunny K.
There were two things that came out of this game that I think show a lot about us as a group. The first being we started to try to play more as a team. So, whilst in a game like that it is tempting to go kick chasing for the most part we stuck to our structure and positions. We were better at using our team mates by kicking to players in space and using handball to create a loose player. Playing against the stronger teams this will be essential.
The second was the way the boys acted throughout the game. Despite the margin they maintained respect for the other team, avoided over-zealous celebrations and played the game out with intent.
