Under 12 Girls Purple vs Ormond (R1)

16 April 2018 by HRJ

Aaaand we’re back!!!

I know you missed me, and are all desperate to know how I avoided a conviction but I need to keep a couple of cards up my sleeve depending on how this season goes.

In true form we squeezed in a bit of drama pre game, 3 girls having thought they lost their mouthguards, and suffered our first injury, a jarred finger in the warm up for Lily B.

With a slight drizzle and a slight train delay the first game of the season started with a bang, or a bell, or whistle, I can’t remember, and you all know details aren’t my thang.

Sweeping away the cobwebs the 1st quarter was filled with big kicks, big hits and it was clear that in Div 2 we are up for a challenge. The size of the hits made it pretty clear that certain girls were happy to be back on the pitch. Not mentioning any names – Mika, Daisy, Maddy and Squiz (Eloise). The new girls on the team showed us that they will be adding to the bottom line in no time at all. Matilda was like a dog with a bone and obviously has Rovers blood in her veins. Squiz got the first point of the season, then Mia K got another one and Squiz cemented the quarter with our first goal.

Callum was all about Girling up and Sweeping and would have felt my wrath if I hadn’t quickly learned that they’re actually footy terms and not sexist mansplaining. So good job Callum!

Second quarter went something like this. Aliyah mark, Mika high tackle, Mika behind, Elicia great mark, Mika behind, then a mark and a bad kick, Lizzie goal then a behind, Elicia behind, Lizzie behind and Mika behind. Great quarter!

At this point I became aware of two things, Katie, rostered on as Umpire Escort had been escorting the wrong person and a mother from the other team has peaked waaaaay too soon. She looked awesome! Heeled boots, blowdry and an awesome pink coat. Well played mystery mother.

Callum seemed comfortable with his leadership and told the girls to “keep doing what you’re doing” and Pete held up the little white board like a boss! Since the girls where doing so well they spent their time seeing just how far they could make Leigh run.

The third showed us that Ormond weren’t going to lie down and put a couple of points on the board. I also learned that a ruck is the name for when they throw the ball up… I think. Shanti, Squiz and Maddy went hard in defence, so hard in fact that Maddy reported back that “I made that girl cry!” We hope the Ormond girls is okay.

Mia K and Mia S where doing well sweeping and getting the ball back to the forwards.

The final quarter gets a little sketchy due to 3 coffees and a bad decision to not go PeePee at half time. But here goes.

Ormond scored straight away and we, the collective parents, got just a little less cocky. Jess did a great charge down and there were good marks by Steffi, Evie. Then I wrote “Ta” nothing more so either I a) sneezed and peed a little or b) the action heated up and I got distracted. I choose b. Then what seemed like an eternity later Mia K scored the goal that secure the win.

ROVERS WIN 27-8.

No premiership hangovers here, and a great Rovers song in the dressing rooms with all the new girls in the middle. Welcome Evie, Jess, Ava, Matilda, Abby and Amelia, Rovers through and through.

Now on a side note, Rovers Mums, we obviously need to lift. I personally promise to not wear tights with holes in them moving forward and will strive to continue to improve during the season. I expect each and every one of you to take a good hard look in the mirror and see what you can do for the team. Next time we meet ‘Mystery Mother’ things will look a little different.
