Under 12 Girls Yellow vs Port Melbourne (R12)

23 July 2018 by HRJ

The day started with a banana shaped field, bright sunshine, fierce competition and ended with a smashing victory from our girls: 25 to 2.

We were all a little nervous playing Port Melbourne Colts as they are currently top of the ladder in Division 1. Last time we played them they beat us by 50 points or more. However, our girls fought hard and really showed those Colts just how far we’ve come.

The first quarter started well with plenty of pressure from our girls. Daisy got a couple of points, Aliah took a ripping mark and Leni secured a goal. What more can you ask for? Gathercoles as team manager and trainer? Fev as goal umpire? Suey as an Escort for the umpires? Yes, yes and yes. We had it all.

Second quarter we kept up the pressure and doggedly kept after the ball. Mia K was excellent as sweeper, doing everything that the coaches asked of her and more. Aliah looked like she brought her own ball, smooth and accurate all game. Mia S, Lizzie and Lily had plenty of the ball too. Mika ran and ran and put her body on the line.

And welcome back Daisy! Athletic as always, plenty of shots towards goal and a great goal in the last half really sealed the game.

Andy’s umpire whistle was like a party popper without the streamers, but his decisions were fair. Gary was yelling “Rip and Run” and Adam said other things that can’t be said again. Suey did nothing about it and Ben ate a truck load of dimmies.

Towards the end of the game our girls copped a few injuries. Mia K knocked heads with a Colt. Emily Thorpe went in hard and came out with a sprained thumb.

Coach Callum was delighted with the win and said it was the best game he’s ever seen the girls play. Our tackling was good all game, we kept the pressure up to them, and this is what made the difference. Keep this up girls and we just might make the finals.

Awards to Mika, Mia K, Aliah and Daisy. Well done to all the girls – it’s so much fun watching you play.
