Under 12 Girls Yellow vs St Kilda City (R6)

20 May 2018 by HRJ

The stage was set with the two teams looking physically pretty evenly matched. Callum made it within a whisker of the whistle and Andy our umpire (Lily’s Dad) said he was glad he had lots of hairs on his legs because the skies were grey, and the air was cold.

The St Kilda girls started strong and so we knew we were in for a good fight. A point in the first quarter and plenty of attempts from them. Our girls however rose to the challenge.

Our tackles were fierce especially from Eloise and Maddie, who had an extra touch of agro for the day. Go get ‘em Maddie! Daisy looked fantastic, weaving in and out of players as did Aliah flying through from behind the opposition to take control of the game. A pass from Daisy saw a beautiful goal from Mika go right through the posts. Not long after followed a great goal from Emily, great work Em!

Lily really turned it on this week, dodging players and taking marks. And as Callum put it, she’s been here from the start but really blossomed this match. At one stage, we were up by a goal and pumped that we were holding our own in this new Division 1 league. We’ve come such a long way with our skills, and in how we move as a team on the ground.

The rain came down towards the third quarter and the girls battled on as the umbrellas went up. Mika and Batman showed flair and determination throughout. The Mias were mighty with Mia K getting us out of trouble a few times and Mia S hunting around goals and getting passes out. Eloise said that despite the fact that there were no oranges or snakes on hand this week, it was heaps of fun. Mud on her shoulders, arms and legs testament to her dogged run and tackle style.

The St Kilda team did get the better of us though with 2 points the margin at full time. Our girls left the ground however with their heads held high.

With another Rovers team mate going down this week with a fractured wrist we have decided to put a ban on any more injuries! Get well soon Stefi.

BOG went to Aliah, and other awards to Lily, Esme & Caitlin.
