A cold and chilly Sunday morning greeted our players for our round 14 final home game against St Peters. The group were keen to commence their pre-game warm-up drills on the ground which was great to see and everyone was switched on. At training during the week we spoke about continuing on with our intensity, pressure and attack on the ball. In the pre-game address we spoke about playing as a team, controlling the play and taking more risks. We also had another huge incentive for a strong performance as another one of our wonderful players in Mitch T was celebrating his 100th game. Mitch is an exciting midfielder with amazing silky skills and incredible turn of speed. He’s got a terrific mark and sets up so much of the play into our forward fifty. Always dependable, he never gives up and is always committed to the contest. The team provided a guard of honour as he ran onto the ground and we all knew his teammates were going to give it their best today.
St Peters however came out stronger in the first and kicked and early goal then followed up with two more majors for the quarter. At our quarter time huddle we spoke about playing more in front of the opposition and making them earn their possessions. In the second quarter we certainly improved on our work rate as our team started to find the ball but with the game mostly played in the opposition’s forward fifty we found it difficult to rebound out and as a result St Peters posted three more unanswered majors for the quarter. Being seven goals down at half-time we certainly had our backs against the wall but there was only one option for us. Dig deep and get back into the game. We came out in the third and played our best quarter for the day. We took the game on and really showed what we are capable of, holding the opposition to three points for the quarter. Not having scored ourselves we made it our goal in the last to at least post a major for the day. After lots of hard work across the entire ground we posted our one and only major for the day courtesy of Taj.
There was so much to like about our game today and much improvement still to be made. With only one game left for the season our goal now is to finish off as strong as possible and we will hit training track like never before.
Congratulations to Mitch T, not only for his best on ground four quarter performance today but for his amazing 100 games. Thank-you for being such a great player in our team and such a terrific teammate.
