Summary
Wet weather footy came early this week, with the team facing its nemesis from 2017. The players’ attack on the footy was obvious from the opening bounce, stopping the Hawks from scoring any goals with the wind in the first quarter. A 4 goal second quarter with the wind by the Rovers broke the game open, and the team kept the pressure on in the third and fourth quarters, with a strong defense and threatening offense. An excellent win to start the season.
Highlights
- Brodie J leading the team out as captain for the year, and leading by example for 4 quarters
- Paddy T’s first, second then third efforts competing for the loose ball
- Ben S’s tapping the ball forward along the boundary line despite opposition attention
- James McN’s forward defensive tackle late in the game that kept the ball inside our 50
- Lucas C presenting well at full forward, taking a big mark and goal in the 2nd qtr
- Alex P’s tireless rucking all day (he’s been watching Brodie Grundy, one suspects)
Things we executed well
- Slick handballs under pressure in difficult conditions
- Linking handballs, then run and carry into open space
- Stout defence for 4 quarters, with defensive pressure across the ground
Room for Improvement (RFI’s)
- Maintaining our structure discipline when the ball is inside the 50’s
- Delivery into the forward line from centre-half forward, not from the dead pockets
- Wet weather marking and ball handling
