Sunday morning, I received news that 3 lads were pulling out due to various issues, mainly sickness. We had Jules and Lach coming in, which pleased me greatly. I should have left 10 minutes earlier as getting a park at Murphy field was no easy task.
Graham had the boys all warming up and the white board showed us with only two on the pine.
Fast forward 60 minutes of game time and I was a very proud coach. Some rain in the 1st quarter made the ball a little slippery. We didn’t adapt quick enough and still tried to play a tight handball/ high possession game, this led to two goals the opposition got through our turnovers.
We outworked the opposition, it’s as simple as that. We took our chances and every boy contributed. We fine-tuned certain areas and rotated good numbers in all sectors of the park. We dominated the rucks and our clearances were first class with Archie, Kento, Lachlan and Elliott getting first use, Mason and Alexander worked well rotating deep forward into the middle.
Lucas did well at full back, with Max missing the back line did well, Ted McKimm and Ted Mackie both stood tall under some close attention, Matteo mopped up, he was tighter than Fort Knox, Josh and Ben as always looked dangerous, worked hard and used their skills to drive us forward, Jensen, was Mr everywhere, his game has gone to another level. Jackie G lead up, lead back, found plenty and kicked 3 snags.
Cecil had that moment of brilliance each quarter, his long kicking yesterday a highlight, Oli had plenty of chances, just didn’t get his foot to the ball and capitalize but worked hard.
As the ground dried out the skill level by our boys to own the corridor and run and gun was first class, Kyle showed us his kicking skills with some perfect passes. Jules went back, forward and Mid to great effect, always a solid contributor, Brodie was very reliable in all areas of the ground, Nuts rolled forward and kicked a well-judged goal.
What we did well
– Hunted in packs
– Out muscled the opposition
– Used the ball well
– Teamwork was solid
– Good skills
What we need to improve on
– Not over doing the handball in the wet
– Voice
– Kicking goals when directly in front
GO ROVERS
