Under 14 Div 2 vs St Peters (R3)

15 May 2019 by Paul Carrigan

My concern with our group going into round three was how we might turn up mentally following a 14 goal win the week before. I spoke to the players about this and we worked extensively below the knees pre-game to highlight how we might lack focus against a hungry St Peters.

My concern was alleviated 40 seconds into the contest, Alex to Tractor, Tractor to Kento, long range kick, scramble, goal, like the week before the boys had turned up to play. Nico and Xavier came into the team at the expense of Dylan and Max, both injured. The back six in the first quarter were tight, Jules and Kai mopping up, Mateo offering good run. Jackie G went on from last week – he is growing in confidence and being where the ball is when needed. Three goals to him, well done Jack.

For three quarters we out played St Peters. Big Mason took a great contested mark and shows promise. Kento, Elliott, Lach and Archie were great in tight. Archie kicked two rippers on the run. Ben S could have kicked the goal of the year with three bounced a hand ball receive and his shot faded in a real classy move. Josh D was lively all game. Kyle ran well, as did Cecil. Mason C was tradesmen like – no thrills just hard work and was rewarded for some good play in the second with a goal.

My BOG from last week, Ted M, was up and about, clean and smart, and good overhead. Jensen always puts his head over the contested ball, he was very smart and executed by hand and foot really well. Cecil went into the ruck with great effect – his run and carry from a stoppage was first rate. Mason, Alexander and Cecil gave the onballers first use often. Our overlap running, and handball was great to see, just how we train. Kaleb kicked a classy goal and Ollie went forward from a wing and stood up and hit the board also.

Ted Mc, Lucas and Nico work hard and worked to instruction. Xavier was clever in patches and worked well defensively when he went forward.

Lachlan went to CHB in the last and took two great intercept marks highlighting a great game. For mine, Lach, Arch and Kento were the best for us yesterday.

What we did well
– Overlap running
– Ruck work, given first use
– Skills for the better part were good.
– Stuck to game plan.

Areas for improvement
– Tackling, we need to hold tackles.
– More desperate on last line
– Need to be tighter in last minute of each quarter, NO LATE GOALS.
– Voice, demand the ball

Coach – Paul Carrigan
