The wind was cutting, and the competition was fierce down at the Brighton Beach Oval this week. Our girls put in a great effort despite the scoreboard 32 (24-8) to 12 (6-6).
Lottie started off well, kicking and running and generally flashing about with her green headband and mouthguard jangling – is it ever properly in your mouth Lottie? Both Mia’s (S and K) were strong this quarter as was Tilda. The Brighton crew had the wind however and were two goals and a few points up when the siren sounded.
Our Rovers didn’t let that shake them and held those beach-siders scoreless in the second quarter. It seemed that Daisy was everywhere, marking and swerving her way through those Brighton girls. Lily’s strong tackling and goal were clear highlights – her first and our only goal for the game. Light it up Lily!
Back with the wind beneath their wings, those Brighton girls were hungry for goals in the third term. Our Rovers kept them at bay however until the last 10 minutes when they snatched a goal and a few more points. Brighton Beach proved too strong, tall and powerful with their play for us. And, with a handy bunch waiting on the bench, they had fresh legs aplenty too.
Our 12 valiant players however kept the effort up all four quarters. Mika got her sprint on a few times, lithely pushing the ball forward. Daisy managed her trademark Daisy Dive Roll, Tilda was dogged at the ball all day and Mia K was reliably good. Aliyah clocked a truly impressive tackle; like a heat missile, she eyed her target and took them to ground erupting audible ‘awes’ from the crowd.
Coach Josh congratulated the girls on their effort all game; their muddy bodies proof. “This is the best game you’ve played all year. And don’t let the scoreboard get you down” were his words of encouragement post match.
Awards to: Mia S for excellent effort and being best at training, and Daisy for having a great game too. Aliyah was awarded BOG for a brilliant game all round and for her sensational tackle.
Chin up girls. You did well. Come to training on time, and with intent, were the final sage words from Josh.
