Under 15 Div 1 vs East Brighton Vampires (R6)

3 June 2019 by HRJ

After a Thursday night game review we headed to Peterson St for our game against the Vampires. Even though it was only round 2 this was a classic “8” point game. Vamps were looking for back to back wins and we were chasing our first 4 points.

On Thursday we named a team of 23, by 12:20pm Sunday we were down to 19. Injuries to Liam R & Presley E, Will O-Kerr out with illness and Christian not able to play the 2 games. Thanks to W Tuffley & Gathers for jumping in at the last minute to get us back to 21.

The first half was a very even contest on the score board, but we thought our ball movement was a lot better and our attack at the ball was giving us more chances deep into our forward line but we just couldn’t convert. Our backline was rock solid. Playing close when they had the ball, then attacking as soon as we had it back. Well done, exactly what we had spoken about pre game. Our mids were working well again but we were up against a well drilled oppo. 18 forward entries apiece.
2.8.20 – 4.5.29

The 3rd quarter was a slog to say the least. We played our brand of footy for the first 12-15 minutes, then lost shape and we were losing patience. The last 5 minutes we went away from our plan it became panic football. Only 4 points scored by both teams.
2.12.24 – 4.9.33

At 3/4 time we spoke about patience, don’t panic, trust the game plan, control what we can control and the result should go our way. We had all out attack mode and Vamps looked like they were set in def mode. Vamps had the breeze but no one would have known. The ball was locked down our end, but once again, we just couldn’t get reward for effort and the points kept adding up. The boys kept to the plan. Vamps couldn’t punch through our press, except for 1 occasion. The time clock was ticking down but the dam wall had to break. Finally we managed a 6 pointer. Scores level.

Back to the middle for a crucial centre bounce. Up it went, a few bodies flying around and back it went our way. Big marking contest, ball hits the ground and unfortunately so did a Vampires player. It looked like with scores level the game was over. No one likes to see a player on the ground.

Stretcher called for.

With great courage, the Vamps player made it to his feet and managed to walk off, much to the relief of all at the ground.

Game back on with about 1 minute to go.

Umpire throws the ball up, Vamps win it and a quick kick out but straight back to us and a huge kick forward results in a rushed behind. 30 seconds to go. Vamps kick out quickly and get to our half back line. We had spare numbers and managed to play solid, secure football until the final siren sounded.

Amazing finish.

We had 45 tackles for the game.

41 fwd entries to 27
3.17.35 – 4.10.34

Thanks again to all the boys that played 2 games. Very hard to play back to back games. It was a great team effort. Stay with the plan and the results will come. Well done team.
