Another cool but calm day greeted us as we arrived at Boss James to take on the top of the ladder, East Malvern.
After having only 16 available last week, we welcomed back some jet lagged boys for the game, we welcomed Lachie Cowell (until half time) for his first run with us and his first run after injury and we also had some help from the U14 boys Lohan & Howell. 21 to start the game, what a luxury.
The first 1/4 got under way and we hardly touched the ball for the first 5 mins. EM had shot out of the blocks, scored the first goal within a minute, but once again our backline held up even though the ball kept going back into their zone. We started to get our hands on the ball and with good ball security and movement. We managed to fight our way back into the contest.
6 R – 12 EM fwd entries
Scores level 13 each of two.
2nd quarter we played some good football but, once again we couldn’t maintain our plans for the whole 20mins and EM took advantage when we lapsed. EM’s fwd line was open and they had some big targets to aim at and they hit them. Our mids just gave EM mids to much space. EM kicked 5 goals to our 3.
7 R – 10 EM fwd entries
5.1.31 – 7.2.44
The 3rd quarter was one of our best for the season. We spoke about a few things we needed to attend too at half time and the boys delivered. Our ball movement, ball security, our run and switch across half back was all good to watch. We had control of the game for the first time but unfortunately we just couldn’t get the ball through the big sticks and put score board pressure on our oppo and they managed to run the ball back and hurt us the other end of the ground. Good sides do that.
8 R – 9 EM fwd entries
7.5.47 – 9.6.60
We needed to dig deep and push for another 20 mins. After supplying red cordial, jelly beans & snakes all day we tried to load the boys up for one more push. The final quarter was once again very even for most of the time, but once again to EM credit they just kept playing for the whole 20 mins as we looked like we had some pretty tired boys out there. We got close, but 2 late goals to EM put the game out of reach.
6 R – 10 EM fwd entries
27 – 41 for the game.
8.5.53 – 12.9.81
Once again, well done to the backline, these boys have been busy for the past 4 weeks.
Well done to Jamie Delaney on a great job when asked to play on #32 Dalton, thanks to Olli & Jules for helping our numbers.
This week is a huge game for the group. We are lucky that results went our way on the weekend and we are still on the hunt for the top 4. This weeks game against Beaumaris is a final in June.
