With several outs we were immensely grateful to welcome Henry Owen making his debut to the Div 4s, taking numbers to 18. An extra bonus came when Ormond informed us they were starting with 16, giving us 17 on the paddock and 1 on the pine.
The Boss was blowing an unpredictable wind with what felt like a 2-3 goal advantage one minute then nothing the next. Captain Noah won the toss and we were kicking with the wind. With Sam M and Hayden sharing the ruck and some strength and speed in our mids of Josh R. Josh G. and James our midfield was working well but Ormond were hard at the ball and despite being a man down seemed to have numbers everwhere. At one stage our runner Jen did a head count and yep only 16. Both Josh’s, Hugh H and Oliver F-M putting on some good tackles had Ormond getting frustrated. James kicking our only major for the quarter we finished the first qtr 8 points up 1.3 (9) – 0.1 (1) which didn’t feel like enough.
The second quarter Ormond had the wind. It was only through momentary lapses in awareness of the opposition and a little bit of panicked disposals that allowed Ormond to put 2 majors on the board. We’d responded with a goal coming from Hayden taking us to a 3 pt lead 2.5 (17) – 2.2 (14)
Half time reminder to the backline to stick with your man saw our fullback Sam F following his player down to our forward line and ended up with a couple of shots on goal during the 3rd qtr. But our backline was performing just as instructed and their determination to win the contest, second efforts and manning up meant the ball came back out of Ormond’s forward whenever it went in and they were kept scoreless during the 3rd qtr. The wind played havoc with our kicking and we ended up putting 8 minors on the board. 2.13 (25) – 2.2 (14)
By the fourth quarter the boys were running out of steam. They had put in everything thus far, we used our bench with frequent rotations and those that found a spell on the pine definitely needed it. Unfortunately we had lost our rotations midway through after a gutsy effort and tackle on Fraser K who went off with suspected concussion. Noah H. with a goal in the last qtr saw us go out winners 3.15 (33) – 2.5 (17).
A totally different team to last week which we put behind us the boys were switched on and really put in a tremendous effort, tackles were strong and support was there. Well done !
