Sunday morning sunshine – time to wake up early for once and blow off the cobwebs – parents and players combined.
A perfect Winter’s morning greeted the team for our game against the Vamps as we came back from a week off from footy. It was the kind of morning that’s perfect to clear the head and have a game of footy – sunny (a little bright for some), still and a great ground.
Mornings have never been our strong suit but some outstanding football from Isabel, Tamsyn, Steph, Shae, Alex and Annie had us proving again that we can tough out games.
Both teams looked a little rusty early but it was always going to be close against Vamps so our efforts to maintain our ferocious style was going to be needed.
With the early loss of Greta, who had been starring in the ruck, our game plan wasn’t going to work as well as what we hoped. It was fair that the girls forward were becoming frustrated as they were outnumbered and opportunities to score were few.
A couple of injuries to Vamps players and to Ali slowed the game down and when we restarted for the last quarter Vamps attacked time and again in an attempt to make up the two goal deficit.
Eliza and Tessa were magnificent in defence communicating and organising.
Annie ran all day and Elisha helped out in the ruck magnificently.
Two standouts were Alex and her negating of their best player number 13. The second was Isabel almost single-handedly repelling the Vamps forwards during the last quarter.
It was great to hear the team song being sung again even if the parents were locked out of the change room. Then again, the change room was the size of a phone box.
Thank you to Sophie and Bella for coming down to support your teammates.
A big shout out to Jaye Thomas to thank her for the year so far. Jaye probably won’t be playing again this year. I loved having you in our team and you will be missed. We might not see her again in the jumper but hopefully she will be down to support some games.
Also looking forward to seeing Soph, Bella and Buddy back in action soon.
Thanks to Chris for being a fantastic assistant coach and runner. It was great to have a fantastic communicator encouraging and organising the girls in the absence of Jacko.
Pete and Pickers outstanding work on the boundary yesterday. You should take time to recover this week after a big night, sorry game, like that.
Sal and Sal thank god the two of you were there.
And thanks to Shane and David for taking up last minute duties on the day.
See you all at training on Thursday.
