Under 18 Girls vs St Bedes Mentone (R3)

13 May 2019 by HRJ

A little bit of Mother’s Day Magic… Debutant Balls, After Parties, Coughs and Colds… what could possibly go wrong? Well as it turns out a hell of a lot went right!

We were up against a very good opponent in St Bedes Mentone who pride themselves on playing great football.

It is fair to say we weathered a storm in the first quarter and saw a team who could run the ball and kick long try to intimidate us. But the signature spirit of our girls to always make it a tough contest was there in spades. While our opponents had loads of opportunities, our pressure made their attempts at kicking goals inaccurate.

But there were signs of something else. As Jacko said yesterday having weathered the storm there was a growing sense of belief, a sense of being up for the fight and actually running the ball, handballing, harassing and winning the ball forward. We were going to not just defend we were going to take this game on.

It is fantastic to be part of a group of girls who continue to grow and take on each week’s challenge. Learning from mistakes, encouraging each other through the tough moments and the doubt.

Three players in particular, Annie, Tilly and Caitlin arrived far from feeling their best. What is inspiring is that they didn’t just go through the motions but fought really hard throughout the game.

On top of that Bec fought through an injury to her hand and demanded to go back on. Amelia has battled glandular and was insistent that she would be more than right to go. Her last quarter contests were invaluable.

All of those acts allowed us to run St Bedes off their feet and give confidence to the rest of the team that we could fight it out and in fact dominate through the second half.

Bella, Steph and Greta played outstanding games.
Ella again produced an amazing game rucking all day.
Kim’s last quarter of composure was sensational.
Tessa and Eliza down back were composed, right to the very last second.
Molly, Anika and Lilly across the wings helped defend and attack.
Meagan and Ali showed they love to fight hard.
Isabel was magic defending her opponent in a multiple of positions.
Jasmine’s defensive running was excellent.
Elisha showed her magic up forward.
Shae’s clean hands were really important through the mid field.

Thank you to Tamysn, Alex and Katy for getting down to the game despite being injured.

My apologies again for being so loud from the bench. I am so inspired by your continuous improvement and your potential to take the game on I get carried away.

Also I did say I thought that victory would confirm we would be in Div 1. That may not necessarily be the case so we just need to keep playing our best and see what that achieves. Divisions may be confirmed after the next round. We play Prahran next Sunday.

Well done on producing another exciting fun game.

And one favour. Please let me know by Friday through Teamstuff if you are playing. It really helps with getting organised for game day.

Keep an eye out for messages from Sal and Pete regarding training and communication.

Coach – Richard ‘Coyney’ Coyne
