This week’s game was another away game to St Kilda City.
A team that while they were low on numbers proved that they were willing to put up a huge fight to make the game super competitive.
Firstly congratulation to all our girls for fighting hard in a very physical game. The game was far closer than what the score would indicate for a large
period with the first half and last quarter having very little in it by way of score. The third quarter proved to be the difference with ferocious tackling and tough bumps forcing players from the field.
The highlights for me were how much we weathered the storm in the early parts of the game with our defence standing up to an almighty challenge.
Equally our last quarter effort where we kept our opposition goalless by fighting out the game and working hard for each other was a true representation of the character of the girls. I really enjoyed how we are starting to use the ball looking for a teammate running past. I believe it is great testament to the girls that they all want to do their bit on game day and show up in large numbers.
Particular mention should go to:
Alex for her fierce contesting and tackling.
Kim for the amount of run in the first quarter.
Lucy for playing a great tag on #6.
Ciara who worked brilliantly in defence.
Polly for her hard running and pressure in the last quarter.
Buddy for her great ruck work.
What can we learn from the game?
It’s really important to stick to the game plan to man up. It is critical not to become distracted by things around the game that have little to do with how you can choose to play. There is little value in being frustrated with the umpires! (yes that includes me…guilty as charged). Make sure the coach has the right number of players on the field. (yes guilty as charged again.)
We will play St Kilda at least two more times this season. I look forward to making those games as equally as competitive and changing the result to being in our favour. Finally thank you to all the volunteers and thank you again Brian for a super job rotating the girls on and of the field.
