Under 8 Blue vs Beaumaris (R1)

30 April 2019 by HRJ

Round 1 of the Under 8 season 2019 kicked off on the Anzac Day weekend. It was very fitting that both teams started arm in arm with a minute of silence. During this week’s training, the coach gave all the kids a talk about what Anzac Day meant and emphasised that team work, looking after your mates, self-sacrifice and playing with the right spirit was more important than winning.

Rovers had 25 players on the day and Beaumaris had 14. In what was a great display of sportsmanship, 6 of the Hampton Rovers played for Beaumaris in the first half, and then swapped with another 5 team mates for the second half. Not one of the kids complained about playing for the opposition, which was not just a credit to the kids, but also to their parents for the way they have bought them up.

The match was played in great spirit with both sides being very competitive and showing a high level of skill for what was the first official game of the season. Both teams had a lot of play in their forward zones and the game was entertaining for all on the sidelines.

If the first game is anything to go by then we are all very excited about what the rest of the season holds.

Next week we play Mordialloc Braeside in what I am sure will be a very competitive game. I look forward to seeing you all there.
