It was great to be back at “the Boss” today after a couple of weeks on the road and again, Melbourne turned on a perfect day. The lads were a bit all over the place in the warm up, this could have been because the coach forgot the footballs so we had to make do with a size 3 leather ball, something the boys aren’t really used too. However, by the time it was time to run onto the ground, the boys had managed to focus and seemed to be switched on for a big first quarter. Our captains Mans and Marcus won the toss and decided to kick towards the Bluff Rd end and led the boys out.
The boys started well, with the forwards holding their positions and creating space resulting in a fantastic passage of play that began in the middle with Nick passing to Charlie who had found space on the flank, who hit Zac leading into the hot spot and most impressively, Zac shared the ball with Leo who made space right in from of the goal. This passage bought a smile to the coaches’ faces as we are putting our training into action on game day whilst showing great teamwork. In the back line, both Marcus and Angus had good quarters as they kept the ball in front and were able to create play for their teammates further up the ground.
The second quarter saw Ollie G playing in the ruck and winning the contest, which was great to see while Angus was selling candy as he kicked us into attack. Up front, again it was the teamwork that was great to see with Spencer and Jack A sharing the ball to create chances. We have been working with the boys to get them leading to the footy and it was great to see Nick B was leading well. Down back, Zac and Leo were tackling their hearts out and keeping the Vamps out.
The third saw more of the same, as our boys continued to hold their positions which created lots of space and the rewards followed after the mids led by Zac and Ollie H moved the ball forward to Angus who found his way to goal. Backing up after a big week last week, Spencer was again in the thick of it proving a handful for his opponents. In the backs, HD was fantastic with good chase and tackle efforts before attacking the ball hard and coming off second best after a collision and needing a rest before the last quarter.
In the final term HD came back on and together with James won centre clearance after centre clearance. including some great link up play, which allowed the Lachies to star up front. Lachie Matthews was finding it at centre half forward while the junior tractor was relishing playing at full forward and managed to kick a couple over his dad’s head who was waving the flags for the day. Zac was also enjoying being upfront, but was doing the hard things well, his defensive pressure was awesome and in one play chased, tackled and was rewarded with a goal. Out of the backline, the teamwork was great again, with some precise kicking from full back by Angus, Ollie G and Spencer as the boys cleared the ball around the flanks.
It was great to see all our team contribute today, as I said, we could have given out 19 awards as everyone played good, team oriented footy. Our awards winners for the day were Charlie, Lachie Meehan, Ollie G and HD.
The boys seemed to enjoy the game so much, they sang the song twice in celebration!
Thanks again to all our parent helpers who always put their hand up to help.
See you on the track.
