Firstly a happy mothers day to all our awesome mums who help get our kids on the field each week! Mothers day turned on a magnificent Sunday morning at East Sandy, the sun was shining with no rain in sight.
We knew today was going to be a new challenge for our boys who earnt the right to step up a division with a perfect start to the year. Easy Sandy were in the same position were also keen for a challenge.
With Marcus, Zac and Ollie G away, we were lucky to have Alex White step into help out and he slipped into the team seamlessly and contributed well all day. Our captains for the day, HD and Jack R won the toss and elected to kick to the left of screen. As expected, the first quarter was the biggest challenge of the year as East Sandy showed plenty of skills as they moved the ball forward. It was great to see our boys in the backline in the thick of the action, having to defend repeated attacks. Axel and Alex were strong, while Leo and Angus continually ran the ball out of defence. Charlie started well in the middle and it was great to Spencer fresh off the plane from Thailand. Up front Jack A had it on a string and Ollie was leading strongly and finding space.
We seemed to have the majority of the play in the second, but were unable to convert on the scoreboard and as luck would have it, the minute East Sandy took it up the other end they were able to convert – that’s footy! The boys effort was really good as Mans and Lachy M’s playing well up front and Nick and Alex W defending with all their might when needed.
East Sandy played a strong third quarter and dominated the ruck contest. It was a great lesson for our boys who have become used to having it all their own way through the start of the season and had to adjust to a team that were continually attacking. At the end of the third we regrouped and the boys were asked for a big effort and to concentrate on being first to the ball, rather than sitting back, watching and hoping their teammates got the footy.
The boys started the fourth quarter well and attacked the ball strongly. Our midfield was fantastic with Tim, Tractor Junior, Mans hard at the contest and winning possession to move the ball forward. In attack, Jack A continued to do it all, he marked the ball well, chased hard, tackled and was ultimately rewarded with a goal for his efforts. Nick B almost kicked the goal of the year but it was disallowed after taking a extra bounce.
Although we didn’t get the chocolates this week, I think the boys will learn a lot from playing against a well drilled team who appeared to have more structure than us. We’ve got some things to work on this week at training, so make sure you come along.
Our award winners for the day were Jack A, Mans, Alex W and Nick.
Thanks to Emily for organizing gifts for all the mums and hope you all were spoilt for the rest of the day.
Looking forward to another challenge next week.
