It was another cold, fresh morning with the boys arriving early and keen to start. Johnny and Harrison K were the captains for the day and the got off to a fine start kicking their preferred way for the 1st quarter; assisted with a slight wind in our favour.
The game was underway and immediately the going was tough. Murrumbeena were eager and hard at the ball. They scored their 1st goal in the opening minute. Our backs were brave but couldn’t stop their run. This trend continued throughout the 1st and into the 2nd quarter.
They hunted the ball in packs and were quick to get into position. Our boys were trying, laying good tackles and moving forward, but had little chance to get free and pass to a team mate.
Freddie slotted a great goal from the boundary in the 3rd quarter. This was much needed and well deserved after persisting against strong opposition. The key message was “don’t give up, keep chasing and help your teammates”. To their credit they kept up the pressure.
George was relentless in his pursuit of the ball. Harrison K continued to impress. Elliot was in the pack trying to get the ball out. Cooper was commended with his 2nd efforts and Xavier managed to break free for a running kick.
Freddie again was reading the play well and getting 1st use. Charlie Q was quick on his feet and Liam M continued to attack the ball with a bit of dash.
Well done to the boys for pushing on, but each time the opposition had the answers. Jock chased down a player and never gave up and was rewarded with a free for a solid tackle. Felix’s 1st tackle, followed by a 2nd and 3rd attempt was inspiring to watch. Remarkable efforts all round, even if we couldn’t turn the tides of play.
The backs on the day were kept on their toes. Johnny saved a few close calls and stood up well as one of our match captains. I’m certain we all learned a lot; sometimes it doesn’t come easy. Hard running and team work will pay off. Well done to the boys for playing fair, and for keeping their spirits high. They knew the opposition we just too strong.
Thanks to the parents for all their vital help on the day and a special mention to our Team Manager Lou Q for all her tireless work on match days and behind the scenes in the lead up.
I’m sure we would all agree we have a team of champions. Let’s keep at it – and we’ll soon have a champion team!
Looking forward to our next challenge.
Cheers, Paul Knight
